We haven't been shy about singing the praises of Yamaha's hot three pipe SRX series. When it first appeared in '98, we named it our Editor's Choice because it so clearly surpassed any sled on the market at the time.It remains one of our top picks, thanks to improvements Yamaha engineering made to it for 2000.
Yamaha dropped the SRX 600 for 2000 and lavished major modifications onto the 700. For starters, the Japanese engineering crew tried a higher output digital 3-D ignition system which delivers a single electrical burst to each spark plug in turn, instead of firing all three plugs at a time. This enables a more complete burn in the combustion chamber which delivers more power.
Also adding to the horsepower boost on the 2K SRX is a redesigned airbox which lets the engine breathe easier at high rpm.
Other performance and handling enhancements for the coming season include relocated control rods which give better weight transfer on acceleration. While this will definitely make the lake runner happy, our test crew felt that the extra transfer diminished what they felt has always been the SRX's best attribute: flat cornering. "If you give the SRX the juice too early in a turn now, the inside ski pops up too easily," noted Test Rider Dave 'Benedict' Pereda. "The original versions cornered flat, and that was the best part of the sled- you could scream into and out of the corners."
Test Rider Doug Erickson sums up the SRX, "As in the past, the SRX sets the stage for what all other triple triples should strive for. The SRX 700 rides much like the lighter weight twins, yet in all-out drag racing,it performed extremely well and rivals most 800s." Maybe that's whythe other factories packed up their 700 triple triple sleds and went home.
