1999 arctic cat jag 440

There's basic snowmobiling and there's Cat's version of basic snowmobiling. The Thief River Falls (MN) company's Jag 440 offers the uniqueness of Cat snowmobiles in a most affordably priced and historically durable vehicle.

Like other Cats, the Jag is no "me too" design. Up front is a fifth generation of Cat's exclusive AWS "wishbone" suspension that offers 7.3 inches of ski travel on a 39-inch ski stance.

At the rear, the Cat's FasTrack suspension gives it up to 11.5 inches of rear mogul absorption.

Under the recently restyled hood, the Jag houses its 431cc Suzuki-built twin. The fan-cooled engine is somewhat unique in the modern snowmobile world as it uses a single 34mm Mikuni round slide carburetor that is a proven way to control the feeding of fuel to this gas-sipping Cat. The Jag 440 is one of the most economical to operate sleds on the market. Just ask any tour operator. Combine thrifty fuel usage with a standard 10 gallon fuel tank and you have a sled that can stay out on the trails a very long time.

At 42 horsepower the Jag 440 has less than half the power of a ZR 500 "fuelie," but it's ample for reaching maximum posted trail speeds.

Other features found on the 1999 Jag 440 include the Arctic Cat wide roller drive clutch with its close tolerance design for increased durability. And for Jag owners, durability is key to this sled's overall success.

Afterall, the Jag concept has been a Cat stalwart since the 1970s. It's the sled that brought many snowmobilers into the sport in the first place.
