Kugaaruk, Nunavut,
Canada - The tiny Inuit
settlement of Kugaaruk, on Canada's
Arctic coast, remains virtually untouched by the outside world. Kugaaruk (which
translates to "little stream"-it is also called Arviligjuaq, or "great
bowhead whale habitat") is located approximately 150 miles above the Arctic Circle. Access is only by air, an
annual sealift--or by snowmobile.
The Netsilingmiut, or "people of the seal," are traditional
people who have occupied this isolated area for centuries and have only
recently had regular contact with the outside world.
A new expedition into this remote land combines the thrill
of traveling by snowmobile with the excitement of being in the deep polar
wilderness. The "Arctic Circle Snowmobile Safari" is an 8-day/7-night
package, led by Inuit guides, that provides the ultimate hands-on adventure.
It is offered by The Great Canadian Travel Company, North America's foremost experts in travel to some of the
world's least-traveled regions.
This region of Arctic Canada is home to polar bears, caribou
and musk oxen as well as walruses, seals, whales and myriad seabirds. On
the program you will have the opportunity to spend time in local Inuit
communities meeting artists and elders and learning more about the rich culture
of these resilient and remote people.
The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Safari is priced at $4,950 per
person, plus tax. Departure dates are April 14 and April 26,
2013. Included in the package are two nights' hotel accommodation at the
Inukshuk Inn in Kugaarak, three nights at the Naujat Hotel in Repulse Bay (some
15 miles south of Kugaaruk and located exactly on the Arctic Circle), two nights'
accommodation in Winnipeg and all meals, as well as snowmobile rental. Flights
between Winnipeg and Repulse Bay
are also included. Experienced Inuit guides will lead the
safari. Tour members should be in generally good physical condition and
prepared for low temperatures and rapid weather changes.
