M7 ECU? Burnt up

While riding with my brother Saturday his ECU on his 2006 M7 burnt up. Close to being on fire. I am not sure what caused it to burn up, but will be inspecting the wiring harness today. My question is how inter-changeable are the m7 ECU's. His has a square on it, however I have found one for sale with a triangle and I do not know if it will work.

The triangle will not work unless you get the triangle injectors with it. ECU and injectors must match
