03 800 1M Temp Light On at Startup

Started up my 03 800 1M and the temp light comes one immediately. Turned it off, started it back up and it still is on. I haven't ran it for a couple of weeks. Took the coolant hose off where it enters the head and start it and coolant immediately comes out of the head. Any idea what the problem might be? Is it just a sensor malfunction, is the thermostat bad. Would like to go riding tomorrow.

check the red wire that goes into the head would be on the exhaust side little sensor, some times come loose, just wrap a bunch of electrical tape around it if that is the problem

the red wire if i remember right has a white or yellow stripe down it

thanks, unplugged and the light goes off, this isn't going to cause a problem is it...just need to get a new sensor as soon as I can right?
