hey guys, need some advice. my wife and I are going to Vail, Colorado in December and we want to rent sleds out there, I have 2 choices that I can see, either rent the sleds and ride on my own or go with a guided tour, not sure what to do. looking to see if anyone has been there and rented sleds or gone on any of these tours, any feedback would be great, thanks, Ron

I would suggest Nova of the two. There is a lot of riding in that area and they will let you ride on your own. Their "aggressive" sleds are RMK 600's. They also do guided tours. Their location is a little remote, but not that hard to get to.

I've heard rumor that Piney is about to go under, but I don't know if that is true (it would suck to book and get up here and not have sleds!). Another option if you drive is to pick up the sleds in Denver. There is a place that rents XP's, M8's and D8's by the day. I think it is about $185 a day. I forget the name of the place, but someone on here will know.

Nova is what I was thinking about using, since this will be my first time to the area I thought we might do the guided tour, not really sure if I want to go ditchbanging by myself with my wife incase we get stuck or something, I guess I was wondering if the tour is needed and if it will be a slow pace or fast pace or what, I don't want to go with the tour and have it be cheesy and a waste of money, from what I've read this place where they ride is crowded? any more info would be great, I'm really looking forward to this trip, thanks, Ron

There are two places that rent in Frisco. I'll check em out Thursday when I go back to work. Might just be the awesome 550fans though.

It would be nice to no who else rents 800s though. the only place I know of is 5 Star rentals

Is 5 star the place in Denver? When did you start working again?

Nova rents sleds at Camp Hale, back side of Vail Pass,20 minutes or so from Vail. They have new sleds every year.RMK 600's are their best sleds or you can rent a 2 up POS 550 trail touring(don't do it!!)

Rebel Mt Sports in Frisco rented RMK 600's last year but I don't see sled rentals on their site for this coming season www.rebelsportsrentals.com or http://www.coloradobackcountryrentals.com/snowrates.htm both will rent you a sled and drop you off at V/P.

Well marked trails and grooming at V/P.Shoot me a p/m if you decide to go to V/P and I'll give you some more info.
Pete

I just started renting sleds....real sleds. I'm about 90 minutes from Vail, but I can work in delivery for you... I am now renting a 09' M8 SnoPro 153", a 07' RMK 600 144" with a bunch of performance parts on it, and a 03' Pro-X Mod sled with a Struthers 800cc and Holz tunnel with 155" Camoplast on it. Check out my site--below, or just PM or email me. The M8 is new, so I don't have it on the site yet.

Thanks!

Don't do the tours. You end up riding in a single file line with a bunch of S.P.O.Rs and then get to rip it up in a circle when you get to the "Shreddin Meadow"

Again, 5 Star out of Granby rents real sleds and you can take em anywhere you want. There is that place in the Wendy's building in Frisco, Backdoor Sports, I think? And then there is that place on Main. I'll check tomorrow.

There is another one that rents 600 RMKs out of Steamboat and I'll get the number later. It's on my desk at work.

thanks for helping out, you guys are great!

thanks for all the info guys, it is being very helpful in deciding what to do, I just want the best bang for my buck, I don't really need a 800, a 600 will be fine, but I do want to see some scenery while I'm there not just the slow pokes in front of me, I think everyone should experiance snowmobiling the way they want to, I don't ride 80 mph all the time but I also don't want to be doing 15mph with a tour, still debating what to do, it seems like Nova is a good one to go with and it's conveniant to where I'm staying, just have to decide whether or not to do the tour, it's funny my wife is a little hard on the throttle sometimes and she is worried about being slowed down by the tour also, are the trails in these areas marked or are there trails at all? or is it just a wide open free for all? I am excited for this trip and we really want to have a good time, plus this will be how I am starting off my season since the trails don't open until the middle of Dec in NY, by the way when does the season actually start out there and when do you usually get ridable snow? thanks for the replies, Ron

Ron go for the unguided tour.

There is a well marked trail system in this area so even going it alone should not be a problem. But by that time this section on snowest will be very active and someone will gladly offer to show you around.

We could start riding as early as the middle of October or as late as thanksgiving, depending on what Mother nature throws at us. I'm hoping for the early start! :beer;

Ditto what dizz said, stay away from the white helmet brigade, you'll be happier.

There's plenty of people on here that ride that place, it should be easy to tag along with someone.

Kinnr3,

I agree on the guided tours. I got stuck behind a group going up Red & White (Piney) and the tour guide had to get off of his sled to turn the skis for someone. Wow, could you imagine being part of that group?

PM me if you want some details on the area. I'm in the local snowmobile club and I can provide some information on Vail Pass (back side of Nova Guides site) and Red & White (locals riding area that our club grooms).

If you do your homework before you get here, pack some maps and know where you are going before you start...I think you can have a much better trip on your own with your family.

hey guys, still working on the plans for this trip, we are flying in on friday Dec 11 and will have Sat,Sun,or Monday to rent the sleds for the day, if I go with Nova guides and rent my own sleds will it be busy where they ride them on a certain day more than another, and is it public ground that everyone can ride on or like there own area??just wondering when I should make the reservations for, any help would be great, bye the way we are staying at the park hyatt beaver creek hotel if that helps with anymore ideas, thanks, Ron

Beaver Creek........pimp'n ain't easy.

Yes it is a public riding area. If you are only going for one day Monday would for sure be less crowded. Night and day from the weekend. But if you are able to be flexible I would wait and pick the blue skied day after a huge dump of fresh :D
