Does it really gain much by putting k&n filters instead of airbox?

ok im thinking about putting k&n air filters intead of my airbox and i was woundering if it gains a whole lot or if its even worth it.
any advice?

What machine?
Really you will never tell a difference it is so small. The kn will make more noise for sure so it sounds like more is happening.

I would say it depends on your model of sled. Some of the older boxes really sucked, and I am not talkin air. One problem I see with the K&N's is that they mount behind the motor so all the hot air being pushed into the area past the motor is hurting the effeciency. On my sled I found a way to make some elbows that turn the air fiters verticle and raise them above the motor. From carb mount to the elbows I had to increase my main jet 6 sizes (actually 1 and half turns on the Lectrons).

K&N may not be your best choice. Many prefer the Kick A$$ fitlers. Not sure if they still make them or where to find them. Might want to look for those.

Kick a** filters are definetly the way to go. I have put them on all of my race sled thus far and they are vastly superior to any K&N. You can find them on PSI's web site for $42.00 ea or on goodwin performances website for the same price.

I have always thought that changing to pod style filters would hurt more than it would help. Your stock air box draws COLD air from outside the hood. Switch to pods and you are drawing HOT air from under the hood. Cold air makes more HP.

I think pods have been historically a bandaid for people running different carbs or the stock air box not working with an engine swap. Some air boxes have been tuned for a harmonic similar to pipes so the intake gets a pulse at the right rpm. All in all I would talk with the local tuners. There are higher flow airboxes, and you can "gut" the box on some models for an improvement. Sometimes you can even vent the box. The goal is flow of cold air tho. I think Pods are a last resort...but there are some notriously restrictive boxes.

you guys say it depends what u guys think i got a 680 ultra engine that has a 805 big bore kit on it and it does seem to be getting nthat much air to it do u think that 3 k&n air filters would help me out.

I think it was the guys at RK Tech that told me the first thing to do on my 900 cat big bore was to get rid of the air box and go to the Kick *** filters.

thanks for all the inputs on that idea...i have a 2000 RMK 600...
i dont think im going to try it after all.

I run a bb ultra. First run EGT's at 1175. Removed air box. second run EGT's 1100. I can't remember what shape my air vents were in or if it was a warm or hot day....let me know what happens...

Run pods they will make a diffrence. You won't just suck in warm engine air if you have vents, any vents will draw in cold air. And yes pods do make a diffrence, much better unrestricted air flow and weight loss, don't just gut your air box because you may be removing valuable filter material which could allow you to draw contaminents into you carbs/engine.

I have a raised bulkhead so I CAN'T use the stock airbox....didn't want to fab a new one...so running filters. There's nothing like cold fresh air from outside the hood.

Basically ANY time your pulling air from with in the motor bay your going to loose compared to pulling air from outside the hood. I would never use filters because I saw how much my sled fell on its face from too much heat inside the hood even with an airbox let alone with filters. I didnt have enough vents and that thing was a dog, took off the hood and here we go so after I cut some vents into it i was good to go. i could only imagine how bad it would have been with filters.

This dont sound good for me!:( I am putting pods on only because my sled is so bad at sucking snow into the airbox thus amking the sled run like sh*t. I thought the pods would help eliminate that problem. I did think of the hot/cold air thing and still got the pods. I guess I will just have to see what my sled acts like:confused:
