zx eating gas

my 800 zx summit is sucking down the gas and i can't ride as long as my buddies. Any one have a solution to this problem and if its something i have to buy where can i get it?

Carbs

Had a 02. Stock from the factory they had 500 mains with non adjustable needles. Horrid on fuel, couldn't get 65 miles on a tank :face-icon-small-sad. The stock carbs have NON Hooded needle jets, Get a set of carbs from a 04 or 05 summit , they have hooded needle jets thus running smaller main jets. I went with a hooded needle jet kit from CPI... back in the day it was around 100 frogskins. Way crisper bottom end, better fuel mileage. With this kit I was able to go from 500 mains to 430 mains, riding at 2500 to 6000 feet. Boysen reeds help also. Dino

Check the chokes on the carbs. I had this problem a few years ago, about 45 miles and I was out. What happened was that they got gumed up and stuck open a little bit. A little shot of wd40 and work them up and down and problem solved. Upgrading to newer carbs is a good idea too.

1. Check the DPM hoses
2. Check the DPM for leaks
3. Check the solenoid to make sure it is working
4. Check the choke cable make sure it is not to tight
5. Check the chokes to make sure they are not sticking open

If everything above checks out OK.

Try someone else's carbs that are getting better mileage and see if problem goes away.

If that fixes the problems

Replace the needles, seats and the floats in both carbs.

They are letting the fuel flow past and the gas is being dumped in the cylinders. They are spendy but how much are spending on fuel.

The 02 had a warranty bulletin about running rich #2002-8

Relocate plastic flat washer from underneath to above throttle slide needle circlip on both carbs

Install 500 main jets remove 520n jets

the 02 also had a recall back then. mine was running that way when i first got it new get about 40 miles to a tank had the recall done and problem went away dont remember what they did on the recall though

I don't know about the non-hooded needle jets, that's what I'm running on my ported 01' 800, 20 pilots, 500 mains, .010" needle shim. I get farther than my dad's 03' 800 MC efi, probably 70 miles out of a tank, same as my buddies 03' summit with the hooded needle jets.

I think Elkman has it, I thought I remembered a recall on the 02's for issues like this.
