ZX airbox mod

Sled is a 01' Summit x hmk 800, ported, "thing" can, RKT replacement pistons, and a shaved head. Will gutting the plate and airhorns out of the airbox help any? I actually thought about moving the airhorns down over the carb inlets, just for kicks, dunno if someone has tried that. Is there anything to loose? Thanks for the help!

Similar set up here. I think I noticed a bit more power when I gutted my air box. Could have been all in my head, but it can't hurt to try.

hmm.

i was thinking aboot doin this mith my zx but then i thought about it. If you have a DPM and a arbox sensor i think it would get all ****ed up because of the increased airflow and what not. the more air the leaner, so the DPM would richen itself out all the way i beielve, so it wouldnt do a thing.

I have no idea about these electronic things so i may not be the one to listen to..

pissed off any neighbors yet motley?:D

I did this to my 99 670 x with DPM. I went up 2 jet sizes, it seemed to run good and have more power, plugs looked good. Then I had a lean burn down on a long hard pull. So I rebuilt, went up 2 more jet sizes, seemed rich. Went lean and stuck the rings again on a long hard high altitude pull. So I put it all back, rebuilt and sold it.

I was later told that it is OK to ditch the baffles, but to leave the horn alone. I think it was something to do with the DPM calibration. This is just my experiance and what I heard after the fact.

I've had mine gutted for over a year and it doesn't seem to run too rich or lean. Not sure if I noticed any performance gains, but I think that it did.

air box mod

I did it on my 01 when it was new and it was not happy it had a bogg on the top end The dpm did get screwed up

Actually.......YES! My run across the field after the rainstorm did turn some heads!:D Mostly laughter though. I understand what you guys are saying with the dpm, but, has anyone run a timbersled setup on a REV? The setup just runs pods and uses a mount to hold the dpm sensor near them. Does anyone know if they need a dpm recalibration or something? The dpm is my main concern.

With DPM I think you're better off not messin' with the airbox.

I installed the SLP snap-in flow rites in the dash of my ZX, dropped down 2 jet sizes, and dropped the needles 1 position on my 03 ZX 800HO with DPM. Thing runs like a dream.

Yeah, I took out the speedo and put in a flow-rite, but I wasn't sure, you know, vents don't do anything if the airbox won't flow it! But your probably right, not sure if the gains would be worth the possible issues.

axel?

A 8" axel should wake her up a bit. and lean her over easier. I got one if you need it :)

or a mountain fit lexan hood :)

or a Hymark roller secondary :)

or gravity worx racing throttle and brake extensions :)

or custom valved hpg shocks :)

man, I feel like a business man now...:cool::D:beer;

Hey, I'm off to college next year, and have to finish a project truck (sig.) before then, so I'm broke! Besides, I already have a bigwheel kit! Oh, and again, that Thing can sounds BAD A$$, thanks again! So, any other comments on the airbox? How about jetting, I left the stock pilot jets in it because of the porting, but when it idles about 3500 rpm when it's cold. It does calm down when warm, idles about 13-1500. My buddy says I live a diesel stripe in the snow when I jump on the throttle hard. Thoughts?

dirty snow.

Have you tuned your oil injection? it may have goten adjusted and your pumping to much oil.

or mabey your plugs arent hot enough to burn the oil in the cylinder.

post some pictures of the truck..and the sled?!

Hmmmm.....never thought about the oil injection. I did turn it on the fat side to break in the motor, maybe that's the diesel stripe. Anyone have any thoughts about the f-ing fast idle on cold start-up, fast enough it can ingage the clutch! Oh, the truck is a bare frame back from the painter, front suspension going together, lot more of a project than many think! Hard to make enough money when still in HS!

trent, your sled is slow!! get a real one.

my new 1000 does leave a little streak and a cloud, but after my last sled, ill keep the oil up kinda high ya know? we can mess with your sled plenty over thanksgiving break, and go test it out in red meadow.

dont mess with the horn, just mess with anything else you feal like, and get some EGT's and try and not burn it down.

I have to wait all the way to winter just to prove to you the old zx STILL works over the pow hard! I don't know, can you keep a motor together long enough to prove it to me!:D Sorry, that was low.
Dill, thanks, that's what I thought, but the plugs are wet on idle, everyone says that you can go to a 17.5 pilot stock, I think the stock ones are 20's, but with the porting, I figured I'd leave it! I guess It'll be a lot easier to diagnose when the snow flies, but I've ran out of things to polish.

i would drag ya in the field, but im not round right now, my 738 had 17.5 pilots, and it was golden down low, and that motor made plenty of power, bout the same as yours.

you can go look at my sled, and polish the tunnel if you want!!

Hey, maybe by the time you drag that rt back up here, It'd set out in that Butte rain enough to copper-coat that tunnel! LOL! Look like something on a DMC vid!

BTW, I think I should come over there and steal that RKT motor!
