You've Got To Be Kidding Me! Sled Quits First Day of a Four Day Ride!

Glad to hear that you have figured out the problem with your M8. I was the orange summit with you guys on Friday. The way the fog got that day you might not have missed that much. Of course Saturday was unbelievably nice. I rode with some other folks and we put over 90 miles on. One of the guys in our group, that day, had a similar problem on his new 800 Dragon. Fooled around for over an hour and it wouldn't start. Pulled him off the mountain about 15 miles and when we stopped to add fuel to my sled he thought he would try it again. Sure enough, it started. So, we let him motor himself the last 20 miles to the truck. I don't know if the Dragon would have the same issue of yours but I'm sure going to share this with him.
Hopefully, I'll get an invite for your ride on President's Day next year.

I heat taped the pizz out of my injectors when I installed my SLP pipe. Just went out and doubled checked it after reading this to make sure there was still clearance after a few rides.

I think I will be checking mine out now too. Thanks for the heads up on this boys!!!

Really dont want to have to pull the Y pipe off though... What a pain in the nuts to get it back on

you can get to it by taking the pipe off and then disconnect the injector wires and get them out from under everything. no need to pull a bunch of stuff.

I read about this a while ago another thing i did was turn the injectors off to the sides a bit it gives you more clearance, haven't noticed any ill effects but turn them slowly and some body pipe up plz if it makes a difference in any way. I had to turn them in order for my controller wires to fit properly, i also heat taped them but i am thinking heat shrink would work the best then heat tape over that.

same thing on the 1m 900

the 1m 900's have the same problem with the wires coming out of the stator. they very slowly rub to the point where they short out and dont go at all.

i thought i had lost a fuel pump and it was a short in the wire.

damn the electrical troubleshooting

Treewelldweller, thanks for all your help. If I am not mistaken, weren't you the one who was pretty sure it was a stator that had failed?

F_ast you don't have to pull the Y pipe to check. Just remove the pipe and the shovel head shaped aluminum heat shield below the Y pipe and check your wires and routing.

Kane13 I too spun my injectors around a bit to find the most clearance I could find. The PTO side wires I actually ran in front of the fuel rail and around the end above the primary clutch to keep it away from the heat and potential rubbing. It's the Mag side one that was causing me trouble and I can see why. No matter how you turn the injector there's not much clearance between the wires and bottom of the heat shield. I shoved a screw driver handle above the fuel rail to increase the clearance next to the injector.

Yes, heat shrink would be best for the wires but unless you cut the wires some where, I couldn't figure out how to get it on there.

I have a fair bit of room in between both injectors and shield on each side when turned out a bit but you may have bent your shield a bit different, and those connectors just pop out and snap back in if your wire has wore through i would recommend heat shrink. If you pull of the OEM connector from the injector and look at it there is little grey tabs holding the wire connectors inn, push up on those with something pointy and gently pry down while gently pulling on the back of the wire should slide right out, keep note on which wire goes where. There is little plastic insulators between the connector and the wire to protect from the elements you should be able to slide the heat shrink to the back of that melt it down and re-install wires into the plastic connector housing. Maybe tomorrow i will do mine and take some picks for ya i meant to do it already but mine were ok and i was in a hurry i will get back to ya.

Here's 2 more it didn't take long i will finish up tomorrow, i had to cut back the stock harness a bit and make sure to mark the pos wire i did that blue on the connector. Actually my positive that i am showing is opposite i had to change it around for my controller so unless you did yours will be opposite look at the wires then mark it red stripe is positive and i am using a flat head precision screw driver to push out pins while pulling lightly.

too bad for spoiled ride.

I had a simmular thing happen to me on my m1000. Kept dying on the forth day of a 5 day ride. Let it cool and i could ride it for a short time before it would sputter to a stop. Disapointing!! Checked all the wiring under fuel tank and area, nothing. Finally found that the wires on the main wiring harness that came from the stator to the ECU was improperly run through the front of the bulkhead. The wire in the harness that ran power to my PTO side injector rubbed through the shielding on the cross frame and would periodically short it out. Replaced injector wire and re-routed the wiring harness to a safer location(up through by the oil tank) and ran strong ever since. Had to take off belly pan to find and change it.
Just thought I'd add this info in case anyone looking for answers if they have same problem. :face-icon-small-hap
P.S. we've towed a few Apex's home too. As a matter of fact, 2 in one day !! I learned early though, in my snowmobiling career, that you don't dis anyone's machine, as it might be towing me home one day.:sun:

Thanks Kane13, great pictures and yes this is what everyone with an SLP pipe should do.

I will print the pictures and do this repair over the summer. I think my four layers of heat tape will get me through until spring.

Nice job!

Yep, I'm the one that felt pretty confident it was the stator. Glad I was wrong. Talked to a mechanic friend and he suggested throwing the heat shield in the corner of the shop. That's what heat tape is for. Just a thought. If you get over here again give me a holler.

Thanks again for all the help when my sled was acting up!

Yes, that heat shield is bound to cause problems with the injector wiring. In the off season, I too will install heat shrink on the wires too.

Yes, I'd love to get down there again this season (snow permitting) but, I'm headed to Cooke City next week.
