You've Got To Be Kidding Me! Sled Quits First Day of a Four Day Ride!

Injector wires as stated above, or power commander. My sled half way through the day started running like that(kind of), make a climb come down with low idle and die, really bad low end bog, once it died you could wait 5 sec and it would fire right back up and run decent then start doing it again. when it would bog if you pinned the throttle it would bog for a split second and then take off like crazy. I wound up adding the full 10% on the PC box at low and upped my fuel pressure by 3 psi and +5 all the way across at 3000. then the sled ripped the rest of the day. I'm not sure if it still needed it because the next time out my crank went 6 miles in.
I think with the PC if your not in the perfect rpm slp recommends it will screw with everything. further more if your clutching pulls different throughout the range(as your would) the map is not set up for it, if it creates to much heat and the stock pipe sensor kicks in and says its to hot then its a hole new problem as the map is created for one setup and one setup only.

There is a ground on the upper bolt on steering lope on my 09 m1000, very hard to see. the bolt goes through a nut sert and then the ground goes on with a nut to hold the ground. I tried to loosen my steering post and stripped the nut sert and broke the ground. Pretty stupid design.

I would put the exhaust system back on and remove the power commander before I took it in. then they might think its stock. worth a try anyways to safe a buck

do you have a tether cord? If so unplug it and also the key. mine was doing the exact same thing and it ended up being the tether so I just unhooked it for now and I am using the kill switch

^^

And the high comp head and domes - that would need to be swapped out too.

my 2010 crossfire 800 is doing somewhat the same thing while pulling up a hill or on the throttle it will cough and stumble then sometimes just die and wont start again for a few minutes then seems fine for a couple minutes....only has 300 miles looking for any advise i am going to check all these same options it is bone stock....thanks alot

I'd check the fuel line to make sure it isn't pinched or binding anywhere. My buddy had a sled that would do the same thing and the fuel line was routed wrong from Cat - the dealer found it and rerouted it and it ran great.

good thought WyoBoy1000 but I wouldnt think you would blow a motor on a stand. I have the same set up and I have ran mine hard with the box unhooked. plugs looked fine. just would not want to do it long term

problems

dont know if its the same but, on my 09 m1000, i was riding the trees, caught a tree that stopped me real fast while i was going slow. I fell forward and jammed my knee into the key and bent it. A while later it started to miss and act up I lifted the hood three times checking stuff until i noticed the key switch came apart and the purple wire rubbed the on the pipe until it started to ground out. pulled it away from the pipe to keep it from rubbing and it ran good all day! Now i need to repair the key switch or get rid of it all together! just an idea!

"My sled and a friends had the same issues. Both had the SLP Y and pipe. The heat shield has to modified to make room for the Y pipe. All you have to do is take a look and see if heat shield is making contact with either of the injector wires. The shield will rub the wire until it grounds out. It will be intermittent just as you described, because the shield will move just enough to an ungrounded position. But if it touches the bare wire at any time, it will be just like you turned the switch off".

I removed the SLP heat shield and sure enough, one wire was completely bare where it was grounding out from contacting the lower portion of the heat shield and its neighbor was wore through almost as far. I taped up the bare spots, wrapped them in heat tape, rerouted the injector wires and bent the heat shield so it does not touch the wires but clears the pipe (that's a trick).

The very first pull the sled fired right up and ran normally.

I wish everything I tried worked out this well!

Thanks again for all the great repsonses.

This is a perfect example of why this forum is so valuable!

great News

I need to check mine. Might be why my box gives me trouble and when I move the wires to unplug it maybe I move them enough it works. At least its something to check

I know I'll be checking mine now. Rather find it in the shop than look for it on the hill! Way to go...........thanks for the update Lee.

thats fantastic news!!! now go hand it to those yamaha guys:face-icon-small-hap

LOL

Glad it was the easy one, sucks it spoiled the trip.

I've been telling people to check this for 2 years and this is the first time I've heard it was the problem, and by another guy too. Was starting to think it was a freak incident. happened on my buddies new 08 m1000 with slp pipe, the bd box wires connectors raised the height of the wires and just barely wore a wire through. Weird thing was it also made it not have any spark as well. Luckily I found it in the hills and we kept riding.

You should have posted this while you were still in McCall. I really wanted to try your M8 :)

Oh, and maybe your feet and arms wouldn't be numb from my 900!

MPI is taking care of me and I should be back in business for the weekend.
Come back soon and ride with us.

LOL.

Lee brought a butter knife to a machine gun fight. (No offense Lee, I really would like to take a spin on that M8)

There was a ridiculous amount of boost in our little riding party this weekend.

Be nice guys!

WakeGD is the fine gentleman who was kind enough to let me ride his Polaris 900 when my M8 was down for the count. The 900 Polaris makes your feet numb and hands numb but, once you get it up to speed it was great in the powder. He also let me ride his supercharged Apex Mountain a couple times and I actually blew his supercharger belt on the way back to the trucks yesterday. I'm glad MPI is going to take care of you! That sled was hauling a$$ before the belt broke!

Thanks again!

Yes, there was a tremendous amount of boost there this past weekend. I still like the Apex better than the Nytros for some reason. It's not that they are bad but, the Apex just seems to fit me and my riding style much better (probably because it's a lot like my 1 ton). Ryan's without the sway bar was the easiest to ride of the three I rode.
