Yet another 6.0 Powerstroke issue.

I've got an '05 F-350 with 110,000 miles on it. Over the course of the past year it has just up and died on me a couple of times. Both times it happened to me I was making a right hand turn and it just shut down. The first time it fired right up. The second time I cranked and cranked on it and nothing. I towed it home and then it fired right up. After this I didn't have an issue with it for about 3,000 miles. Then it twice just wouldn't start for my wife. Then twenty minute to a half hour later it fired right up. One time the engine was cold, the other time it had been shut off for about five minutes. I took it to the dealer on Monday and it showed no codes. It runs perfect when it runs, but it's quite frustrating when you can't trust the damn thing. The dealers best guess was the fuel injector control module might be bad. But wouldn't that either work or not work at all? Seems like a spendy part to buy when it may not even be the problem. Any insight on this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pull the ficm out and check all 4 resistors. I just soldered one up for a guy at work. His truck just kept getting harder to start over the months then quit starting.
an easy way to check for correct voltage is to remove the cover from the ficm. Should be 48v when key is on and shouldn't drop much when cranking. On an 05 I believe there's 4 screws and u check the right screw for voltage.
Make sure not to ground +probe on the ficm housing when checking voltage!

Usually when the power supply has solder issues u will get faulty injector codes. And ruff idle when cold.

I would guess the ficm as well. Mine just died one day going down the freeway. Pulled over waited a second started back up. made it a about another 20 miles then died again. Hated that truck !

Had an issue similar when I had an 03 6.0. Every once and a while when merging into traffic on the freeway it would flat out quite. Turned out to be an injector holddown was broke.

I just checked the voltage on my FICM. I've got 48.4 volts with the key on and 48.2 volts at idle. Will the idle voltage only drop when my truck acts up or would the low voltage reading be constant? Thanks for all the feedback. It's been very helpful.

I am not an expert but I believe if u have voltage issues its constant.
Do u have a chip in ur truck?
my last two 7.3 Fords both had chips and they would eventually just die while driving. If I was on the freeway with the torque converter locked it would re-start. If I was in town, I would have to throw it in neutral and start it. One chip was a TTS And the other a SuperChip.
both trucks I pulled the chips and installed Edge programmers and no more dieing.

ford diesel forums will get u much more help than snowest.
that is where I go when I nd help.

The biggest killer of the FICM is the batteries or poor maintenance of them!

Not saying it is BUT if it happens when its hot..... Unplug the ICP switch. If it fires up and runs (puts it in a limp mode) then just replace the ICP. Should be on the passenger side Valve cover. Right behind the glow plug relay (silver box with 2 plugs).

Otherwise.... It could be a wire harness. Do yourself a BIG favor... Buy one of these! Best tool you will ever buy for the money!!!
