Yamaha sxr 700 no top end power

I just recently got a 2000 sxr 700 redhead and I’m having some running issues. When I got it I thought it was a good running sled but my dumbass didn’t take it for a good rip first. It idles good and everything seems fine in the low-end (except the engine pops a lot). But when I give it any throttle it seems like it maxes out at 7k and hits redline. It seems almost alright but it definitely hits a wall and acts weird after 7k. I’ve done quite a bit of work on it but I’m very new to owning a sled so I’m getting lost. When I try it on the stand or take the belt off it seems like the engine runs perfect, snappy all the way until ~8.5k. The sled leaks a bit out of the exhaust connections and there is no air filter. When I look at the belt as I take off with the hood slightly open I can see that the clutches engage but the belt can’t climb the primary clutch. Everything else is fine to my knowledge, if anyone has any idea what it might be let me know.

If the engine pops in the low end id start with checking the pilot jets. Give those carbs a good once over. If those are clean and it still pops after there is a small chance crank seals might be on their way out but that usually effects idle also.

The lack of high rpm could be a few things. If the exhaust leak is that bad that could be an issue as you are now fighting a lack of oxygen. A worn out clutch would also cause it to not tack all the way or shift out on the clutches.

I would give it a full rundown since it is an older sled. You have no idea what the previous owners neglected, so its probably best to take care of all the common maintenance things. My best bad guesses are:

1. Dirty/incorrectly set up carbs. clean the jets and make sure they are correct for your altitude - you shouldn't be popping or backfiring, it should run smoothly from idle to WOT.
2. Look at your reeds and make sure they aren't chipped or broken
3. Pull the clutches and look for broken springs, cracks, worn out bushings ect...worn clutching is very common on older sleds.
4. I can't remember if the SRX had power valves? If so, pull them, clean them and check the cables.
5. Unlikely - but low voltage at WOT?

Let us know when you get it fixed!
