XR400 is it possible?

Hey guys, recently picked up a '97 XR400 in great condition and a steal ($1100) street legal etc.


my question is, does an xr400 make enough power to run a snowbike kit?
and is there any kits out there that would work for my bike or maybe with a little retro fitting? any suggestions or ideas would be awesome! thanks and have a great season!

Possible but probably not practical. XR400 only makes about 30 hp.

Mount up a scuba tank full a NOs and give er a 40hp shot and it might be possible, not very practical though... I would highly recommend a different bike.

Where do you ride? I see your from Iowa. Might be OK at low elevation to see if you like it?

I would be riding the bike mostly in iowa elevation so 1500. what Horsepower range would I have to be in to make it a possibility? I do know a few good motor builders around my area

It's just the wrong bike, your first issue will be the forks are not inverted so they will have to go for basically any kit to fit on. It'll end up being a bunch of $$ for below average performance. I wouldn't waste my time, you'd be far ahead getting a different bike like a cheap YZ250 for snowbiking and keep the 400 for street/trail use.

I would also consider finding a used 2Moto for Iowa riding. They are excellent very dirtbike feeling kits as long as the snow doesn't get too deep. They can be found in great shape for reasonable cost. I know of a few.

i have found a few cheaper YZ250 2 strokes in my area I'm thinking of going that route, i'd like a 2 stroke for trail riding in the summer and i see they make a kit for newer yz250's. bikes for sale if interested haha
