xp riders

trying to decide which sled to get a dragon 8 or an xp 8 just wondering how the two sleds compare
Currently ride an rt 1000 and have only rode the dragon 8
its so much easier to ride and will climb anything my rt will

200 of the funnest miles i have ever ridden on my XP 163". The only issue I have experienced is the handwarmers. By far the best sled I have ridden IMO of course. The power is very strong, pulls over effortlessly(swaybar removed), climbs great, pops out of the snow quickly and floats nicely in the powder. The 154's seem to be having more clutching and belt problems.

The Dragon is a pull and go sled but the XP is king, depends on whats most important to you and if you can wrench on your own sled. I've riden both and both are great in their own way.
So far XP is more powerful, climbs better and Dragon pulls up easier for handling. IMO

I absolutely love my XP. That being said, the Dragon 800 is probably a better sled. The XP will outclimb it by a bit, but the Polaris will have far fewer issues, the chassis is more nimble, and the clutching is better/easier to work with.

No regrets on my XP, but that is only because I'm comfortable working on it/tuning/fixing/etc.

Never been on a Dragon, but my XP-154 is awesome. Hand warmers and kill switch are getting replaced tommorow. I feel I can ride anywhere with my XP, it handles that well. Either way, Kevin at Planet Powersports will treat you well. But if you're serious, ask them for a demo ride. I'm sure they would take you out and let you try each one if you are on the fence and want to buy. Won't hurt to ask.

I would really wait until 2009. Way to many issues this year with the XP.

I agree wait until 09. The Dragon 8 is having plenty of issues also.

Rode the 155 D8 last weekend. It is real close to the REV. It did trench more than the REV in side by side rides up the same hill with the same rider.

The hill was not really steep, but very deep and no place to get a run at it. The dragon was trenching right away and wouldn't float up on top like the REV. The REV was a 151 and cleared the top of the hill and the D8 never did make it with several attempts.

I did like the smooth power of the D8 engine and clutching.

Rode in Cooke three weeks ago with two flatlanders from MN with 146 XP's and those boys ate my lunch. I was really impressed with the performance. Don't know about reliability cuz they both had less than 200 miles on them, but they ran extreemly well.

Buy the xp if you aren't worried about blowing belts every 100 miles, broken driveshafts, bad hand warmers and skidoo's lack of parts when your sled does breakdown:face-icon-small-fro.Buddies XP-X is on its 5th belt at 565 miles,he's bringing it back to the dealer for the clutch update/handwarmer fix..On the other hand you could buy the Dragon and have to fix the air leaks into the airbox(clear silicone) and possibly deal with a CFI bog at 6000 Rpm(Polaris has an update for the bog coming out soon) You are on the Doo forum so the majority of people will say Doo.Look at the complaints about the sleds and make your own choice.Personally I'd rather ride a reliable sled that weighs 35 lbs more than a lighweight sled with reliability issues. Also the Poo has a 3 year warranty something to think about

Why did you ask this question in the DOO section?
IMHO I ride with a D8 163 and so far all the XPs we rode with don't come close to the D8 in a hill climb.
Small issues with the D8. BIG issues with the XP.

that 163 dragon must be riding with a bunch of 146 xp's.

I haven't been out with any new dragons....

...but have yet to have anything come close to my Everest. I'm sure the Dragons are great but have heard from most around here that the XP's are climbing better. the only ppl that could get over a cornice near where i live where my buddies on XP's. i saw some dragons up there after they busted the cornice for 'em.

Sounds like you like the Dragon. I'd go with that. Far fewer headaches to deal with if you're talking about '08 models. Only issue with the Dragon is a small number of them are having a cutting out problem that Polaris is supposedly addressing by releasing a new ECU program this Thursday. If yours doesn't cut out (the vast majority don't), it's pretty much the best OOTB long-tracker ever put to snow.

XP will climb a brick wall. Handling seems to be personal preference between the two. Ride them both, then look at their reliability records thus far (if that's important to you), then decide.

For what it is worth I am a smaller guy and I would take the XP all day long over the D8. Both great sleds, both have problems, if you are buy one this late in the year both of the sleds will have many of the problems fixed before you get it.

I rode a D8 last weekend and it was a great machine. It would be my second choice for a sled next to my XP-X. I haven`t had any major problems with my XP, hand warmers, and a couple of codes which had to be cleared. I clutched the primary with alittle more weight and a softer spring and she doesn`t have any belt issues. One thing I didn`t like about the Dragon was it`s slippery seat. I fell off twice because my knee slipped off as I was riding. Also when I fell the sled tipped over and it was heavy to get back on it`s track. The light weight of the XP makes it easy to lift, even the owner of the dragon said the same thing about it`s weight. But two great machines IMO.

have a 163...good dealer set-up....mountain air, evanston...no issues with sled....over 300 miles, half on road, half in deep snow and hills...one belt....good venting, clutches stay cool (relatively)....took drive shaft out this week and had it welded on both sides (130 dollars), labor and all...preventative, as the drive shaft looked fine....have a cpi pipe and can....no stocker or similarly piped stocker can match it in the deep, have ridden with several poo's, both 7's and 8's....sled goes wherever i want it, up, down sideways, much easier to be confident riding than anything else....i'm not a doo guy, this being my first, but it is truly a fun sled....for a guy buying a sled at this point in time, poo 8's being gone, the poo 7 with a 163 track, pipe and clutching is an excellent choice
