288 is the 440/ 600 mod/ race belt and is a better belt than the 166, and can be used on the 800.

A friend of mine has the white lettering on his oem belt. Of course, the threads have started to pull out of it. I tell him to bring back to ADS(UT dealer) & get another. The dealer tells him the obvious "owner use/abuse" and offers him a "race belt". I don't have the part number with me, it was different. IMO, BRP is copping out & having us by an upgraded belt for their engineering & belt manufacturing f-up's. Don't ya think!!

Same problem here no more adjustment, so I'm going to try a Ultimax XS. I've heard good things about them........

Some guys have been talking about machining there seconday to allow for more adjustment.Does anyone have pictures of this?
The race belt is a 253, and that's what I've been running all year so far. 0 problems in 108 miles. Belt still looks brand new.
From what I've been told, it's a little harder compound, and it engages the clutch a little harder. Same size and everything, just a different material there made out of. It seems to leave a little less belt dust on the clutches. We put the race belt on my sled, and the 166 on my buddies, and we've gone the exact same places so far. That's the only comparrison we have so far.
the 253 is the old race belt number used in 04 the 288 is the new race belt number used in 05 and newer. the 288 has better durabilty and consistancy thats why it replaced the 253 also the 288 is $30 more than the 253 belt.

Don't ask me why but it seems the older 166 belts from last year with red lettering seem to be better than the new white lettered ones IMO.
Both mine are 166. Belt under hood is red lettering from last year. It's a hold over from last year. My XRS never burned a belt either. So far 155 miles on the XP and the belt still looks good.
