Xlt info wanted

Hey, so I just picked up this sled for free( she's rough), the build date is 061994. I'm geussing its a '94 maybe a '95 Polaris XLT with 136 inch track and a triple and the odometer says just over 9000 on it. It doesn't run but turns over nice. What I need to know is the size of engine that came in this sled(580,600,??), and what other models are compatable with this sled? Thanks for looking, Ill post some pictures once the ice is all melted off.

The serial number will tell you for sure. 2nd and 3rd numbers give the year. However going by the build date I would think it is a 95 model which would have the 600 triple in it. 1994 had the 580 in it. Biggest stock track was a 133 back then on a SKS unless someone has changed it.

serial number tag is on RH side of the tunnel (as you sit on machine) up and back from the footrest. 2nd and third digits of model # are year (ie my 97 xlt rmk is model # 0970956 followed by serial #).

The sled has about 4 extra layers of paint on it so any stickers are just an outline of were a decal is. Once I get it off the truck I'll definately look, thanks for the info. While it was in my buddies shop unthawing I did notice it had a broken caliper, one broken slider, one broken ski and both skis have rebar welded to the bottom, the seat needs to be recovered, the front bumper is bend bad and falling off, the right trailing arm is bent, and most of the control arms areloose and quite worn . I'm not to sure if I should part it out or mod it...hmm

So I finally got the sled out of the truck and took a look at it a little closer. What I found was alot of neglect, seems there was a small fire that came out of the air box and melted some of the vent lines, speedo cable, bottom of the handle bar cushion, and some of the under hood foam. I pulled the plugs and there was spark, hmm, so I pulled the air box off and squirted some gas in the carbs, thought there was no way it would start gave whats left of the cord a pull and it started. WTF this sled has been sitting in the feild for a couple years, so I waiting for it to run out of gas and it ran for 5 minutes before I had to shut it off. Hmm. Now I need to decide what to do with it, and I did look and it is a '95.

Ok this what I have heres some pictures

Bonus that it runs and it looks like most of it is there. There are lots of that vintage of sled around with parts that will fit. You gonna fix it up? It would be a good project seeing as how you have 0 dollars in it so far.

Yes I think I will fix it up, a freind of mine just picked up a couple of XLT's, one runs and the other is for parts so I'm hoping to buy the parts sled and put my engine in it. Hoping to be ready for next season, we'll see...

Can anyone tell me how the rear of the trailing arm attaches to the sled, the ones on my sled have a bolt welded to the sled that the arm slips on(two different bolts pointed at odd angles). I also found that one of the right control arms had pulled the hiem out so somebody just pushed it together and welded it, gonna take it to work and fix it.

If it says "xtra 10" towards the back of the tunnel it's a 95. That's the first year they did that if I remember right.

There is no extra 10 in 95 that I am aware of... youd have to look to LATE 96 Early 97 builds before you would see that.
There was however some 96 X12's that you may be thinking of.

The 94 and 95 XLT both came with XC 100 rear suspension and IFS front suspension that had something like 8 inches of supposed travel.

The 95 XLT came with a 600 engine the 93 and some 94's came with 580 engines. Although again there are 94 600's out there. You'd have to run the serial number through the dealer network to get a build spec sheet for the sled to know for sure what you have.

The 580's seemed to handle mods such a pipes much better and were generally just a more relabile engine. While they didnt make as much power they didnt have near the crank issues their 600 counterparts did.

Actually the rear of the trailing arm was attached with a bolt which threaded into the inside of a pipe which was part of the footrest assembly. If you have a bolt welded to the sled that the arm slips onto someone has modified it. The footrest assembly is replaceable but is pricey if I remember right. Look at the Tunnel Assembly of a parts diagram for an XLT at Polaris Industries (item 19) for the footrest. The footrest was riveted to the chassis as outlaw addict says.

hey i have a 96 xlt xtra 10 sled without a engine in it if u need parts... also have a arm or two layin around all kinda of parts let me know what u need im tryin to get rid of this stuff

Thanks for all the advice everyone, got into the sled last weekend and ripped the front suspension off, did a little mod on the trailing arm, fixed the welded control arm. Now I need to buy two tierod ends and put it back together. I'm going to fix what needs fixing and sell it, a buddy has a '01 RMK 700 with a blown motor for $500.
