xbox 360 questions

well im looking at buying an xbox 360 from a buddy who doesnt play it anymore and was wondering what kind of wireless router i need or should get to set up the console for online gaming. also i was wondering if you can use the system as a "computer" to go on the internet and use your tv as a monitor. i know the ps3's can be used like this but am unsure about the 360. if anyone has any knowledge of this topic help would be greatly appreciated as i'm somewhat technologically behind....thanks in advanced

Any wireless router connected to your modem will work fine. Just remember you need to pick up the 360 wifi adapter since the 360 does not come with it. Or you can just plug it in if your modem is close by. You will need to sign up for Xbox Live to play online, its like $4 a month, but so worth it. The 360 also doesnt come with the web browser like the PS3.

You are quickly finding out in what areas the PS3 is a superior machine to the 360. Comes standard with Blue Ray, wifi, web browser, free online play, HDMI, and better graphics.

Only problem is that Xbox live is worth $50 a year compared to PS3's online which is seriously lacking, the game play on the 360 is MUCH better than the PS3, and the 360 has MUCH better games and MANY more quality games than the PS3.

Both have pros and cons, cant go wrong with either. Didnt mean to turn this into a PS3 vs. X360, just informing you of the benefits of both systems since you are new to them, if it goes south I will delete my post.

what is the wifi connector for the 360? i guess a few friends said the xbox will just pickup the wireless connection from the router without it but maybe they are leaving out some information. the only reason i am picking the xbox over the ps3 is because the friend doesnt play it at all and is selling for a steal basically. would really like the ability to use it as an online web browser like i knwo you can with the ps3 but i guess if i want a computer i should just buy one. anyways thanks for the input so far

systems for internet are a joke, thats what computers are for, you will be much happier using a real machine for it designed for it.

I hard wire my connection, although if youw ant wireless you will need an adaptor for it. If you are into gaming you will be much happier with the 360, more games, more content for them, and depending on the game graphics are a toss-up. Online is no comparison with ps3, you get what you pay for with online.

Another thing, the newer 360's have hdmi already in them, and they are in the works for a blue ray player addition to them, just gonna have to wait tho.

I debated for a long time on what system to buy. I bought the 360 because I want it to game on. Sorry I don't know of the list but there are "some" routers that will not work with x-live and the 360.

BTW... the 360 wireless adapter is about $99. You might be able to find a few online for $60. I ended up moving my router to where my TV/360 are so I can plug both of them in along with my satellite box.

I think almost any router from the last 4 years will work with the 360, some of them are "plug and play", these are the router's that are "XBox compatible" and some of them you will have to tweak some settings on the router to get the XBox to work with it, easy if you have some computer networking skills, maybe not so easy if you don't.

I have a Linksys WRT54G and my XBox works fine after setting up port forwarding.

I think I have the Linksys 54gs and it works fine out of the box.

I think you can buy the same router at almost any electronics store. I paid about $50.
