WR 450 Tips & Tricks

Just bought a used 2013 MH short track for my '07 wr450 & am looking for any tips specific to running it in the snow. Will be riding around 5 - 7000 ft. elevation & 0 to -10c temps. Thermostat? Jetting? Intake mods? Any advice to make the transition to snow bike smoother would be appreciated. Thanks.

My riding platform is a 09 wr450f with some engine mods I had tried just about everything for an air filter setup and found that useing the stock air box worked the best ,found a used one on ebay ,completely sealed box than with a hole saw made several openings in the left and right side panels ,than prefilter material over the holes ,frog skin is ideal three seasons use even on the 4 foot powder days no snow in the box just alittle moisture ,I run a rekluse clutch setup winter and summer with no problems ,I found the wax chain lube robs power makes the chain to ridgid so i use sillokkene lube,I went with the Fisher design seat far better than the stock 2x4 the jetting make sure the emission are all blocked off GYTER and a few other make kits to do this with jetting helps ,uncork the exhaust system ,my 2 cents

How do you like the fisher seat? I find the first half the season I can only ride once a weekend as my *** is down right pianfull by the end of the day ( i try to stand up alot but the trees usually dont allow for that and I have a narrow *** so its a bad combo

  • Run your vent lines up (all the way into the airbox if you can) so they don't clog with snow and ice
  • GYTR kit and Grey wire emissions cut
  • upgrade fork spings to .52nm and move to a thicker oil. stock front is way too soft... the stiffer the better
  • upgrade seat (GUTS Racing comfort seat for WR was excellent)
  • add spacers (shim) the back arms on the Mtn Tamer to get a little more rear end squat since the rake is shallower than MX bikes

or you can just ride it :)

03 wr 450

up one size from stock on pilot jet

run engine breather hose into air box

frog skinz the outside of the air box and add hole everywhere and frog skinz on the stock air filter fram......been in 5 ft of powder all day, works, yes eventually you need to clean away the sticky powder

as stated go stiff on fork springs me at 210 stiffest spring I could buy from race tech then run very little compression dampening

14 tooth sprocket

handlebar riser as high as cables allow

weld up bigger foot pegs

thermostat

built plastic skidpan and engine shroud to keep snow off engine cases

throw away front fender, cut down radiator plastic to radiator, run led taillight, gave up after two years on electric start, works in the shop every time

run goooood gas with a little octane booster

don't encourage sleds to follow or someone will get hurt

I found when I ran the vent lines into the air box ,even at the lowest point in box they didn't drain and bike ran rich (I ride upside down a lot) ,so now what I have done took prefilter material and wraped the end of vents and used heat shrink to hold material on ,also someone posted last year on this same vent problem they used a small plastic container to put vents into ,seemed to work ,

Yepp. That was my solution that u are refering to. I have made a small plastic container with plenty of holes in and covered it with prefilter material and fastened it to the TS frame very close to stock positioning for vent lines. Works really good and only scrub the snow of once or twice during a whole days riding just to make sure. Fastened my solution with zip ties to the TS frame.

pills

ditto on the pill bottle, worked with no issues, just built same for my new yz250 build, bottle low so gas can drain after spills.
