wr 450 electric starter

When I built my snow bike I paid more money to find a wr, cheap yz450 everywhere, just so I could have the e start button. Soon found that I had bought into a poor design execution. My electric start is only fair.........being kind here to Yamaha.

What I found is:

if the starter engages just as engine is coming up to compression cycle, starter doesn't want to turn the engine over.............dah, where is your engine coasting to a stop likely to stop, well stopped by the compression stroke.

I was told the same motor ( close copy sort of ) in the 4 wheelers were great starters ( never owned one, any feed back on that ). Use the atv starter. Borrowed one to see, if I had correct model for atv, doesn't fit. They are a bigger motor, might be able to be modded to fit. Might dive into that later...........anyone had experience with that ?

bought chineese aftermarket starter for $100, has more power than oem $250 plus yamaha starter, cranks better, suggestion was made to do this by two longtime Yam techs.

I think the relay on the wr is also weak link in the system. Likely does not have enough contact surface to transmitt power when starter loads aginst compression, new $11 relay works better............for awhile, probably until contacts get dirty.

Wire from battery to relay to starter is weak. Not sure its big enough capacity to really zing starter aginst compression. Tested this, when I run heavy jumper wire from battery direct to starter chit happens, hit buttom through relay, not so good, slower cranking.

So, cranking the starter steals enough juice from iginition, none left to fire plug, old automotive story from way back. You crank engine with starter kind of tries to fire, easy kick on kickstarter fires right up.........real poor setup Yamaha.
So easy way to wire around this ?

What about fitting a larger amp hour battery of the same physical size and or adding a decompression lever.

A battery with more cranking amps might help. Like you said, it could be using all the current in cranking and leaving too little for a proper spark. You might try using one of those battery jumper boxes that has its own battery and see what happens. Ive been looking for a dry cell battery like the "Odyssey" but havent had much luck yet. Those things have amazing cranking power.

some more testing

when I get some time this week I'll run the bike outside and play with starting it in the cold with jumper box, and bigger battery. I studied on battery specs when I put in the current battery, and can say I didn't end up with what I had hoped.

blue wire mod for starting

the neutral locator switch reduces juice to your ignition when tranny is in neutral. disconnect the blue wire coming from the neutral switch down on the transmission and kicking or e start cranking the wr450, starts better according to all the feedback on thumpertalk. going to give it a try.

In a search for better starting, we tried a simple fix. Disconnect the headlight. In our brief test, while the bulb was unplugged it started WAY better, so much so that I think it's too much of a drain for the bike to fire properly. So a long term solution might be to put a switch inline to the headlight so you only have it on when you need it on.

Well, if it was on the internet then it has to be true right?

hehe

Blue wire

disconnected the blue wire from neutral switch on my WR450.

started the ol girl with the electric start on a 20 degree morning...........never did that before. Used e start all day, fired every time. Big imporvement.

downside and oddd ?? Always have to pull in the clutch, in gear or neutral for e start to click in ? no biggy............but where is the wr picking up that signal ?

We also found out in our testing that having your starter actually dislodged from the engine cases due to parking too closely severely impacts the effectiveness of the starter, with or without the headlight plugged in.

Moral of this story is, don't follow the guy in front of you, and make sure you know what's in front of you. (I learned the hard way earlier this year).

I can't wait until the fleet can all ride at the same time, then we can really screw something up.

how about installing a larger battery like out of a quad? i have my air box removed so there is plenty of room to fab a mount for it. maybe then you could run some type of electric carb heat, hand warmers and have electric start:bounce:

wr start'n

down the road a biggger battery is a project I'm going to address

have carb heater, just need to install it now , saw the carb jacket post, will make one of those when I remove carb to install heater. Still have some carb icing with my side panels covering my engine, but way less than other cold days in fluff.

wr starter

thought I had my wr starter working, not so, last two rides in colder weather, just a very chichken chit setup, engine doesn't want to start with the e button........cranks almost fires, does somethines, half a kick and its lights, just real bullchit. Had a $600 chineeeese cheapy 4 stroke scoooter for sale at the shop, would crank and start in any weather with an almost dead battery.
WR 450 wont start with all the good things I've done for it ? Some mothers son really tanked that design.

I totally agree Yamaha has dropped the ball on this one and does not give a s#itt about the Customer else they would fix it.
None of the other EFI bikes no matter what brand have this stupid starting issue. My dealer here has tried everything but nothing really works well.
A super high idle helps and is OK in the snow but unusable in the dirt.
Does anyone from Yamaha read this I got no repose from there rep or website. I love the bike besides that but my next one may just be a different Color:scared:
