Would like some advice on a pickup...

i would prefer to see you get a cummins. But if you dont make sure you run a good oil(Amsoil). As far as what truck to buy im not a ford guy but i would say take your pick. Im just putting my Opinionout for you.

There is a HUGE difference between firing up a big rig and running it non-stop or nearly so for long distances and the start/stop short drive of day to day in town driving. If all you do is long distance driving, great, but the indication was this was a daily driver, which means short repeated cold starts. Again, the difference in cost of oil changes every 3-vs-5 interval isn't much, but to each his own.

any of those trucks would be good.work in a private shop see all makes and models. have 1 company with a fleet of 7.3 in E350 vans 13 trucks with 400K on O.E. motor. trans problems in pick ups seam to be due to heat. not enough cooler in front of truck. also do alot of work for concrete companies trucks have permanent trailers with skid steers. after bypassing cooler in radiator and adding cooler trans problems have gotten less. also interior in fords seams to hold up better.

Get the trans cooler from a 6.0 motor, its about twice the size. (there is minimal fabrication, go to thedieselgarage.com and search) The 4r100's don't like excessive heat.

UPDATE: Well, just as I made up my mind to buy the '02 with the fewer miles, I was driving by the local dealership and happened to spot a fresh trade-in. Almost as if it were meant to be, it was an early '03 with the 7.3, 93,000 on the odometer, nickel slick, and a fresh set of rubber under it for $18,500. Needless to say, I didn't hesitate. Brought it home and after a while noticed a popping noise as I turned a sharp left. Went back to the dealer first thing the following morning and the left hub was seized. The dealer replaced the hub, sent me on my way, and all seems to be good now. Seems good like a good solid truck. Now I need to plan a trip out west to try it out!!:D Thanks again everyone for all the advice.:)

I'm not a Ford guy, but sounds like you got a good truck (last of the good ones). I pulled my boat (4000# ski boat) a cpl yrs ago w/ an 05 6.0 PS. It ran fine for the 2000mi I used it (got a comp for the week from Hertz Equip Rental), but sucked down the fuel, about 11mpg, and it would downshift on moderate hills.
Made the same trip w/ my '02 DMax this year and averaged close to 14mpg, same speeds, same boat in tow, and the truck never downshifted unless I floored it going uphill to pass.
Just keep a spare cam position sensor with you, as these have a tendancy to fail w/o warning, leaving you stranded, and they're fairly easy to replace on the side of the road if necessary. Only standout weak spot of the 7.3's that I know of.
