woodworking question.. dowels?

so, i got this new coffee table. basically a big azz slab of pine with some pine logs for legs.. i sanded the sh!t outta the table top, put multiple coats of urethane on it, looks sweet.. the whole time figuring im going to use liquid nails to mount the legs under it. if you have ever used liquid nails, you know that stuff sticks like concrete.. well, guess what.. it aint sticking..

i was thinking of using some dowels right thru th etop down into the legs..

anyone got any ideas??

Bailer twine and duct tape....

Seriously, Maybe get some stud bolts and some thread inserts. Epoxy on the outside of the inserts threads to keep them in place. Then if you ever have to move it, unscrew the legs

When you're done take picture of it with women and post here

I would try and do 3 dowels in the top of each leg, use 3/8 dowels and put them each in a triangle pattern. Should give each leg enough support to keep it from wanting to lean or tweak.

you wouldnt have to go from the top though. maybe predrill for a dowel say one inch into the bottom of the table, one inch into the top of the leg and then connect both with a two inch dowel. then glue for strength. pics?

"edit" I like the three dowel idea from above, as long as the leg is a big enough diameter.

Yeap, definately don't want to drill into the top of it. There's some fasteners that have a captive insert that you can counterbore into the underside of the table, then the legs latch into that. Don't remember what they're called though.

If the legs are all the same size you can make a jig to punch the holes in the legs and then reverse the jig to punch the holes in the bottom of the table top. This will make everything line up and assembly a breeze. Hand measuring three or more dowel holes into two pieces is a PITA and unless you are very accurate it won't line up. After you punch all of the holes - Dry fit all of the dowels and if one leg is tough to line up just bevel the dowel ends a little bit. Put good amount of Elmers wood glue on each dowel (completely covering each dowel) and assemble. Then stand the table upright and put 40lb or so above each leg and let sit for a couple of hours. The glue sets up in about 30 min, but give it time to dry. Wood+wood glue+pressure= a joint stronger than the wood itself. Use as big a dowel as you can - at least 3 per leg.

Been woodworking for many, many years. Any questions shoot me a PM.
