Wnder Breads Motor.......done.

Wonder Breads Motor.......done.

My Blown engine pics.

Broke the skirt off, it bounced around and broke the case, everything else looks good. So a new short block will have to be bought.

What causes a skirt to break?

That is fukked up! Try ebay or the swap meet. You will prolly be able to find a decent motor there.

Good luck and I feel your pain, 5 times over!:mad:

My 03 skidoo 800 did the same thing a few years ago. From my understanding those pistons were poorly designed and broke down easier (that looks like an HO and not and R motor). Also, through vibration and flexing between the two cylinders it causes them to break down faster. In addition to maybe running it a little too hot for too long, which can cause the skirts to sluff-off and fall down into the crank, blowing holes in the block. I put a remanufactured engine in mine and never looked back, but got rid of that pile before it would happen again. I'm pretty sure I did it by running my sled way to hard getting it really hot and never letting it cool down. Now when I ride really hard, I'll take a break every once in awhile, so it doesn't happen again (which is really hard to do). Definitely good insurance to replace the top end every 1K-1.5K miles or else you get really good and replacing the whole motor. Just my 2 cents.

That could have been it. Wonderbread taped that throttle down on Friday and didn't let off till we attached the tow rope to it. Come to think of it, maybe that is why my 05 kept shelling.

Skirts ususally bread from excessive clearance (room to slap back and forth stressing them), excessive heat, and sometimes repeated deto can cause cracks and then a broken skirt but normally takes the dome first. I can't see the pics right now because of the contraints of the work computer but Will check them out tonight when I get to the hotel.

So what causes excessive clearence? I would think that it's caused by wear and heat. Right? Doesn't excessive heat cause the cylinders to expand/contract, creating clearance issues? There's also issues with that motor not being balanced correctly, causing fluxes between the cylinders and excessive vibration, which in-turn breaks down the motors internal components faster (i.e. bearings, pistons, etc). I'm doing the top-end on my 08 800 this summer, because it's at 2K now w/o any issues, but I am sure that those pistons/rings are on there way out now. It's just good insurance, do the math pistons/rings/needle bearings (~$500) vs whole motor (~$2.5K) reman, w/o installation and that's assuming the head is still usable. You might as well get a remaned motor, because when that motor goes they all do that, therefore the remaned motor has almost all new components anyway.

Ah dude, I wasn't trying to Pi$$ in your wheaties here, just basicly backing up most of what you said. BUT there are other things that can cause excessive clearance. Like poor quality control at the factory, broken belts and over revving can "collapse" a piston skirt enough to cause the extra clearance. Heck the new Dragon 800's have what most builders would call excessive clearance from the factory.

I can go on and on, but knowing the conditions that day because I was riding with him when it went and the 2 days prior I figured I'd only cover the pertanant ones.

Anyway I'll be back at the hotel in about an hour and take a look see at the pics.

Well after looking at the pics I would say you got one of those magical multipiece pistons that hold together for a while and then all of a sudden cablooey. With only 1200 miles I wonder about the heat thing, like Hockaday said. Ever get it real hot?? the 3 days we rode together were deffinately working the motors but should never have overheated, mine stayed @ or below 125 all day.

Either way nothing you can do with the motor but yank the ign, crank if it's still good, the opposite cyl if it's good and the heads and sell them on Ebay to get some cash to buy a different motor.

Nah it's all good! I just wish they could make a motor that would last more than a few 1K miles if were lucky, but I guess nothing lasts forever. So, what's the life of a motor reduced by when you turbo it? I have an M7 that I got for dirt cheap (no motor) and im turboing it this summer.

Not 100% sure there's way too many variables in that statement but on MINE I expect that the motor should live for a good long time, I maintain it. Some guys (skibreeze is one) are having some issues with the D8's but I don't think it's the turbo's fault. There's a chit ton of D8's going down bone stock. I've heard good things about the M7 on boost and like anything if you maintain it correctly and have it tuned correctly it should hold up well. I pretty much figure on a new set of pistions and reeds every year. But like you mentioned earlier $400 for prevention or $2500 to fix it after the fact. But just in case I tote around a spare top end in the trailer. :D Only problem so far is a broken Primary spring and a blown out Throttle body boot.

You should be ready in time to watch the snow go away. The last 4 days have been freaking ridiculously warm. Rained all day Monday and 60°f Tuesday and Weds. I'm not riding again until we get some fresh snow. Riding concrete snow is no fun, no matter how you look at it.

I'm gonna start tearing into the dirtbike today and clean it up and make sure that nothing is broken or worn. Pretty sad for February, eh??!!:eek:

New Motor

Got the new motor yesterday will be putting it in Saturday and hopefully a break in ride on Sunday at Vail pass!

The motor has all new cases and crank the only thing that is remaned is the jugs, plus it's the powertek so it's supposed to have 6 more horse.

Just in time for the season to be over!!!

Hopefully we get more snow soon:beer;

It'll come, but probably at the most inconvenient time. Glad to hear that you will be up again soon.

Got dirt bike?
