wiring harness melt down, fixed, but wont run

2005 rmk 900, 900miles on sled, just got done putting an SLP air box on, already had the pipe. sled ran fine before air box install. Sled ran fine for about ten minutes after install, but then the hood wiring harness melted against the pipe, fused several wires, sled started to run very poorly, sounds like only 1 cyl (getting spark from both), backfires, etc.

the sled did not like going into reverse w/o dying after install

I thought it may be a capacitor or TPS problem, but the sled ran fine until the wires melted, the display went nuts when this happened. i fixed the wires, but still runs poorly, even if the hood harness is unplugged (it should run fine with this unplugged, right?)

so what potential problems are associated with melting those wires, i guess i could have fried any of the sesnors or the ecm with all those wires touching?

is there anyway to retreive codes with engine off (hook up a battery?)

Where should i start?????

Hard to say what might have gotten damaged, nothing is fused so a ground -out can certainly fry key electronics. Hopefully someone with more electrical prowess than I can help you with testing procedures.
Good luck
Dan

a bit better off than you..

I melted soem wires up on the harness to the gauges as well.. I caught it quickly adn sled appears to run all right. I will find out this weekend. My high temp light is still on and brake light it still on..

some things i know.. check you air box tem wiring, if that is shorted out my digital display will not work and engine idles rough..

You can check resistance on many of the sensors to see if they are working correctly.. One of the quick links for 900's has a manual that you can download, all 389 pages, but it tells you step by step instruction..

According to the manual you can fry you ECU withthe ground wire off and stray voltage, so I wonder...

Good luck.. I have an earlier post and still have no good answers to try on my high temp light or brake light.

where can i download this manual, i just went through the 900 section, and did not see the manual?

Thanks

should the engine run fine with all hood wires unhooked? that will help me diagnose if i still have a melted wire

sure..it will run but you wont be able to see your gauges, which is the key in diagnosing the problem..but if you only need to run it for a few mins your fine..BUT the only other issue i see with this is your headlight..your stator NEEDS to have a load on it and the headlight will do that..otherwise you could spike and fry your ECU...

I think in this case I would use the lights diagnostic port to run down all lighting issues I could before I went to start engine again. Then after that, I'd fire it up and concentrate on the engine issues, if any, then go back and clean up on any lighting problems if any remain. Get that deep snow manual!

my thought was that if it still ran crappy with all the hood wires DC'd, i know the problem does not lie in that harness. right? and it must be on the engine harness, sensor, or ecu

it strange that it runs so poorly w/o giving up some codes
