Wiring hand warmers on KTM

My 2010 KTM 530 XC-W has heated grips. The grips are wired directly to the battery. I notice on cold days they kill off the battery in short order. I thought I read somewhere that they can be wired to an AC wire (white?) so the battery doesn't die so quickly. Where is the best spot to splice into another power source?

Power For Hand Warmers

Splice into the AC wire going to your headlight. Your hand warmers will only use current when the engine is running.

I have a separate cable with fuse connected directly to the battery.
Mounted a relay that pulls as the fuel pump starts.
When the bike is turned off there's no current to this cable.
Can also be useful for GPS or other accessories.
For an cleaner installation I use the turn-indicator switch for off, high, and low on the warmers.

I am using the AME hand warmers. Super impressed. 6 levels of adjustment and if voltage drops below 12v they auto switch off. A little pricey but work amazing.

Thanks guys. Is the AC wire for the headlight white?

Looking at the wiring diagram, I see there are white wires used for several items on the bike.

I see a very thin white wire back by the battery, can I just splice in there or should I splice closer to the headlight? With the amount of amperage hand warmers draw, I would think a heavier wire might be a better idea.

I see there are thicker white wires closer to the front of the bike, I really don't want to remove the gas tank if I don't have to.

Here's the colour of the wire where I spliced the positive relay wire on a KTM fuel pump harnes. By connecting to this wire, the relay will pull as the fuel pump runs.
The other wires are negative and fuel warning light.

Thank you Swedenturbo. I assume you mean I should splice my power wire for the hot grips with the orange wire pictured. Correct?

I will look to see if I have another relay. If not, can I splice the power wire for the hot grip directly into the orange wire?

No, this wire will not power the warmers. The KTM:s white/blue fuel pump wire is the one you splice for powering the relay coil. You need a positive feed wire with a fuse from the battery.
By using a relay, no load from the warmers or other accesory goes into the bikes wiring harnes.

Got it, thank you! I will have to find a relay. Is there a specific type of relay I need to buy?

I wired mine directly into the stator. Only runs when bike is on. So far it works great. Yellow wires off the stator. Should be two of them.

Thanks thejean, I haven't gotten to rewiring them yet but, if I can find a power wire that I can access without having to disassemble the bike, I would be a happy guy. Yellow wire off the stator hum.......

AME

Can you cut the ends off the AME grips so you can run hand guards that mount in the end of the bars?

I hate the idea of cutting up a set of expensive hand warmers but that's the only way I could run them.
