Took the grandkids to Winthrop last week. The kids (and the daughter in law) just like the meadows along the river. Had to split the time between trail riding, snowman making, angel making, waterfall viewing, snowfort making, hot chocolate drinking, tobogganing, sibbling rivalry, eating, eating some more and ....

I did buzz up to Sweet Grass (6100 ft) one morning where there is(was) 3 to 4 foot of snow. Be careful - no base yet.

Was a bit worried when 6 twenty-somethings showed up at the ranch where the kids were staying, with beers in hand. Figured the kids would have to listen to late night drinking and carrying on. However, these were some serious riders - they may have had a couple drinks but it was lights out pretty early as there was 'biling to do in the morning. My kind of folks.....

Winthrop does not disappoint for early season riding..... Some folks say there is too much trail riding and too little off trail ..... but I like Winthrop

papa what day were you on sweetgrass? I have a cabin on the west chewuch and was up there from the 27-1st we rode SG Wed. and Fri. Wed was fun! great snow but Friday had the 2 feet of fresh powder. We broke the trail to the top then about 12 of us went off the backside cross country meeting up with the rode back down to 8 mile. Sat we rode to the end of 30 mile took the wife and youngest sons GF with at the end of 30 mile we had to stop for a bull moose in the trail which made for a good surprise. How often do you get up there?

papa what day ...?

I had the gooseneck trailer at eight mile snowpark wednesday-monday. Went to Sweetgrass on Sat. morning. Quite a bit of drifting had occurred.

I suspect that's a lone moose that has wondered down from BC. I saw it (or another) out near 30 mile in October.

I get up to Winthrop/Mazama a couple times in the winter and once or twice in summer/fall.

papa the big grey gooseneck? If so were you there last year also? Moose are pretty common there now we seen 5 in 2010 during hunting season and there was a cow and calf that spent this summer up near freeze out pass.
