Guys and Gals, I was asked to forward this to everyone who rides in the Willow area or is in favor of our recreation choice and ask for some help. The Willow Trails committee has been putting up the signs and marking the trails in this area for years under an existing permit. The permit is up for renewal and a couple cranky opponents are making noise about renewal. Comments directed towards Ms. Snow listed in the text would be appreciated. Thanks

Folks,

The Willow Trail Committee has applied for a State Land Use Permit to post trail signs and information kiosks throughout the West Gateway Trail System. As most of you know, these signs consist of everything from the carsonite "lath" every few hundred yards to the yellow and green direction/ safety signs to the three information kiosks. Unfortunately, there seems to be some opposition to this application, thus the trail committee is asking for your help.

There is a public comment period on this permit application that ends on Jan. 28th. You can see the public notice here:

http://dnr.alaska.gov/commis/pic/pubnotfrm.htm Click Next Page, then click on the Willow Trails Committee Land Use Permit on 12/29.

If you choose to write a short comment, you may want to mention:

1. The heavy recreational use of these trails by snowmachiners, dog mushers and skiers. People touring for the day or traveling to their cabins in the back country. Also people traveling from or to the Nancy Lake SRA.

2. Signs are about Safety. Because of the vast amount of swamps and topography, trail users often get disoriented and lost. In fact there have been many search and rescue operations by Troopers and State Parks in the West Gateway Trails through the years.

Also, natural conditions such as overflow, flat light and white out conditions are common. making signs necessary for public safety. The signs also warn the traveler of approaching busy sections and to watch for differing trail users.

3. Without the signs and the security they provide, people would be less likely to venture out and enjoy the great trails and the open spaces we are lucky to have in Willow.

That trail system is so well done out there I can hardly imagine why anyone would be complaining, except for maybe a few homeowners along the route that mistakenly think that stopping this permit might cut traffic down past their home / cabin.
