Wilderness Workshop Says Snowmobilers are Insignificant!

I know that this is an extension of the Hidden Gems thread, but I wanted it to reach out to as many people as possible by tomorrow night.

Wilderness Workshop pulled off a press conference yesterday without notifying anyone but the local papers. I found out two hours before the conference started (2pm - when most of us can't make it) because the local paper called me.

Read the article I have a link to below. The numbers are incorrect, but they are being skewed in their favor. Sloan Shoemaker states that “Snowmobiling represents a tiny portion of the recreation-based economy in Colorado,”. He also goes on to mention that there is only one ATV shop in Eagle County. Why is that significant? There are no auto dealers but everyone in the county drives cars. Also, there are multiple snowmobile/motorcycle/atv shops in the county.

Vail Daily Article

Bottom line: we need as many people to come to the Eagle County meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) night in Eagle!

Thats priceless,

They are trusting the word of a mountianeering hack who had to cut off his own hand.

I find it hilarious that people think that's a virtue. This moron doesn't have the brains to watch out for his own well being, but he's a spokesperson for this cause.
He's someone who should be laughed at, not listened to.

This kind of article is so frustratingly one sided.

Maybe we (whiteriverforestalliance) should be holding a private conference with the papers... get some motorcycle/ bicycle/ etc shops on board. I am sure we could ring up a good crowd. Just need a presentation...

Having digested the article, didn’t they just make our point !

If we are insignificant in numbers how can they argue we have a impact ?

""Snowmobiling is the primary activity of just 1 percent of the people who recreate in the White River National Forest, he said. Also, “low impact” users like hikers, backpackers, climbers, kayakers, cross country skiers and snowshoers outnumber snowmobilers, mountain bikers, motorcycle riders and ATV riders by a factor of 4 to 1, he said. He was citing a 2007 survey conducted by the U.S. Forest Service.""

ugh...

and he didnt use any combustion to get to his trail head that day he wedged his hand in a rock...lets make the whole damn country wilderness and see how that works....

They say they out numbers us 4-1 but yet had to cancel a meeting last month. Because they knew that there would be way more snowmobiles and such there that their 4-1 wouldn't hold up. And yet at a meeting held in Carbondale. The vast majority something like 300 snowmobiles said they didn't approve of the proposal to something like 5 of them. Where do they come up with this stuff.

I just emailed that granola chewing author of that article some FACTS for her next story.
