Wilderness Riding Fees Increase | CB, CO

lost snowmobilers

on the one story of the three guys that were lost and one died . what was the story on that one where they riding in the wilderness area? in co by kremling?

I'm not sure if they were in Wilderness or not - they were clearly dis-oriented/lost.

This article relates to the forests in the Crested Butte area, etc..

We have a lot of locals and visitors who don't know where Wilderness is (no signs, and don't use GPS), and don't care. It's given the local enviros an easy target.

MD.

the just up'd the fines for law breakers...good!

Maybe they will think twice before doing something stupid. Hopefully they will take the fees collected and put up sufficent signage to mark wilderness areas, not likely.

I rode in Califorina this year and all along the wilderness areas were signs located high enough in the trees so that they were visible all year.

I don't condone riding in restricted areas, but it would be nice if they posted more signs for areas that are off limits.Even with a map it can be hard to tell exactly where a boundary is.

Here is a picture of a VERY responsible snowmobiler, who is making sure that this sign is properly secured.:D;):D

Well done Beergut!

If Brian had properly DISPOSED of that sign. As was the task asigned to him. The untouched pristine AREA would have been ridden hard and left wet!

We all admired the terrain, but there were no poachers. This picture was taken by Mule at the 4m ride in febuary. Good time was had by all.:)

I am postive those three guys are not to blame. Here in small towns of colorado, if you have played in forest any time at all we will break a rule. Now back to the higher fines, they could help save riding areas. Every major pass is this state has a task force to work out user conflicts. What happens is the task force trys to get a balance. Motorized will be ristricted some area and some riders wont pay attention. The higher fines might help. And its not just the snowmobilers there after its pretty much all motorized.

ONLY TAKES ONE BAD APPLE, just has to be the right brand of apple.

Last yr while scouting for the hunts I was almost too the judd falls p-lot coming out of the maroon bells wilderness area when 6 mnt bikers went blowing by me. when i got to the p-lot their was the ranger checking to make sure the 4wheeler in my truck was stickered and let the 6 biker's continue on up the 401 like they were in the right.

I don't mind the fine increase, I don't ride in the WA.

I do mind that they pick 'n' choose when, were and who to impose the fines upon. the envirocons are bikers and never do anything wrong:mad:

I'm still trying to figure out how the bikers where allowed to make a new route through the bottom of rustlers when the FS include a small section of the 401 route into the wilderness.

The riding in wilderness has been going on in the CB, Irwen, Kebbler Pass area for years, 12 plus years that I know of. I am suprised it has taken this long to happen. :(

I had talked with someone in Kremmling about the incident, as far as she knew they were not in wilderness area. The experienced local guy was the guy one who died, he had pre-existing health problems to begin with and died in his sleep, in the snow cave they dug the night before. The visability was absolute zero and they opted to wait it out.
She said there was over 800 people at the funeral.

They have signs posted every hundred yards or so on the border of Zirkle Wilderness Area in places where access may be common by sledder's. Because of the amount of snow we have this year, the signs are now buried. All the locals I know obey the rules, and not to accuse our out of town visitors and guests, but I think they are the cause of most of the problems, i.e Wilderness Area riding, private land trespassing, not staying on the trails that are marked "Stay On Trail", etc.
