Wild Skies Cabin, How is the riding in that area?

Hey I got a few buddies and I that are heading out there for the first time in this area and was just curious how the riding is or is there a good direction to head in from the cabin for some good riding?

Ripple creek is usually pretty good. There was a poker ride up there last weekend, So the popular areas were ridden out pretty good. The snow is set up in the open but there's some goods in the tree'd north slopes. It's has snowed since the ride and is snowing now.

It's the best it's been all season. Over the hood all day. As of Sunday there was 2-3ft with a solid base under it. It looks like it has been snowing up there since Sunday night so I'd expect another foot.

Just got back from this area. The snow levels are much lower than they have been in the past. Seems there have been a ton more riders there this year. Tracks everywhere! Area really needs cover and is surrounded by Wilderness. (cant ride wilderness)

Questions...

We are heading there the 14th through the 21st, so around a week.... so according to what we have been told it is the best it has been all year. So if someone could enlighten us with any concerns that would be great! Yes i did see there are wilderness boundaries that we have to watch, are they marked some what or are you just sol when you are caught? Also what kind of riding can we expect? Is it pretty easy to find your way around or can one become easily lost? We are not trail riders (unless we have too) and tend to venture where we
maybe shouldn't be sometimes..... Just looking for an honest opinion, yes first time to this area as well.....

Thanks!!!!

The common areas were getting tracked out. But if you know the area there is plenty left to ride, Especially since there is Atleast another foot up there since Sunday. Ripple creek is a place that looks like you can see it all but has a lot of hidden holes.

we are staying and riding from wild skies cabin, and this is the first time for anyone in our group to go to colorado. If you know the area from there, what is the best directiino to head?

It depends on the day and the kind of riding you want to do. if you get to the top head west. Poke around from there, just watch out for open holes. You wont find big open climbs. You want to stay off of the few we have right now( parts of pagoda & sand peak)...when are you going?

I have no idea what the current conditions are like, but we stayed at Wild Skies around the new years time frame and had a very good experience. The riding area is pretty big, super low traffic (at that time anyway), and there is a little bit of everything. We probably saw no more than 10-15 other sleds in 4 days of riding, we pretty much rode untracked snow the entire time. Head up the trail past the cabin a few miles or just until the snow looks good, pick a point you wanna ride to, and just start picking your way through the trees and meadows and your bound to find something good. Cabin is huge by the way, we had 8 guys and could have had double that. I plan to go back in the future.

From Feb 19-March 4 had over 6 feet of fresh snow and a new storm is due March 7th

I am sorry I didn't see your post until today. I have been busy with snowmobilers and snowmobiling myself. I am attaching photos from March 5 that show what the snow levels are like in the area. I still have March 10-13 available and March 20-25 and a lot of dates in April. We are the only place on the northern end of the Flat Tops that is open to the public in the winter so generally we have a lot of acreage (over 230,000+ acres of snowmobiling in the area) that is untracked and depending on when you are out riding there is a good chance no one else but your group will be out there riding.

Cheers,
Lisa

Look forward to seeing you again either later this season or next year!

Thanks for the post-just wondering which of the eight that was riding from SD this is and if you have any photos or video of your trip you can share with me.

Cheers!

I am assuming you are with Randy. The snow has been great. over 6 feet fell over the last 14-17 days. It has been great-see photos on a post to this thread I replied to earlier today. However, that being said it was unseasonably warm the last three days. Steve Tweet is out there now and hopefully tomorrow he can post something for you so you can get his honest reaction. Another storm is slated for Wednesday. I'll keep you posted with details on snowfall etc. The wilderness is very easy to avoid because it is all to the east of the road and almost everything you will want to ride is to the west or north so exceptionally easy to avoid. I also have some maps on hand if you guys decide you want them. You can look them over when you arrive.

Well hopefully it snows some like the forecast says.... I know it was a little warm the last couple days but we are going say f$&k it and go!!! I'm sure it has settled some and turned some into spring riding but with temps at home in the 70's were going riding.....
Colorado here we come. Going to be there Saturday through Thursday/Friday....
