Why would a fellow snowmobiler do this to another

the first time i rebuilt a clutch off an 08 xp. I was appalled at what garbage the clutch parts are. I mentioned to the dealer when i went in to buy the rebuild parts that they were crap, he just laughed. so i said, so these clutches have to be rebuilt every 1500 miles or so? he said no, about every 1000-1200 miles it will need rebuilt. That told me right there what JUNK ski-doo clutches were.

I have put approx. 60000 miles on 8 of my Skidoo patrol sleds and have never had a clutch failure. many of the sleds had around 7000 and 1 up to 9500 miles. The only maintenance was blowing belt dust with compressed air.

So is the sled in otherwise good condition?
You said I yourself that you couldn't see the problem until you tore it apart.
Maybe this guy didn't know either since he takes it to the dlr for work he probably doesn't know much about wrenching on them.
Aggravating for sure to pay good $ for something and find out that it doesn't meet your expectations but I wouldn't hang the seller for a clutch that needed to be rebuilt unless there's more to the story.

Glad you're back on the snow. SW is great!
Just this year a guy from SW saved my family weekend ride with some clutch parts he had laying around. Heck he even delivered them to where we were staying. Thanks Newtrout!
Btw I have a pile of clutch parts from a 05m7 and 08 m1000 if anyone needs a spring helix etc. just throwing t out there

I'm glad you got your boy setup to be able to ride this year, that is awesome.

Lessons learned never buy a used sled in the winter without test riding it first. The clutch in that condition would of rattled like a snake and wouldn't of reached peak RPM or hold RPM on a hill.

Aside from the ramps that clutch is fairly easy and reasonably cheap to fix.

For future reference here is the part # for a rebuild kit for that sled. #415129627 it retails for $119, cheaper if you look online at some parts stores. This kit does not include ramps but it includes everything else that you need replaced.

Good luck in the future, sadly talk is cheap, ride it and decide for yourself.

Bad rep

I am sorry for hurting your feelings snowmobiler for the remark that I made. I must of touched a sore spot because of the bad rep i got about 89 sandmans remark you must ride together.

It looks like you need the entire movable sheave from what I can see in the pics. The material that retains the movable sheave bushing is gone, so a new bushing will not stay. A new sheave assembly comes with the bushing JFYI. The sheave, ramps and a Maint Kit and you will be good as new. The Maint kit is MUCH less $$ than buying the parts seperately.
I would put a Maint Kit in any TRA used in the mountains every 1500ish miles as preventive maintainance.

Thanks for the info on the maintenance kit. I will have to get one. As far as the sheave goes your rite, the retaining lip is gone. I was able to get a bushing pressed in it and I'm Hoping it will hold up for a days ride. As far as the rest of the sled its in pretty good shape, no bent bulk head or anything.

I have a clutch that I will offer to fedex it to you that you can borrow until the season is over. I will even pay for the fedex.

It is an 02' summit 700 clutch, but should work well on that sled.

You just get it back to me in a few months........

Our season is over for the year here in Minnesota.

Let me know your thoughts........

I want that kid to go riding!!

Jeff:

That is one of the most decent and generous things I have seen anyone do in a long time.

BRAVO to you bro.

That offer EXEMPLIFIES everything good about this sport and our community.

I just upgraded your membership to LIFETIME for being such a good member of our community!

If a size Large will fit you (which is all that is left now), I would also like to send you one of our SnoWest KLIM Hoodies as well.

That is like I said in an earlier post, when my wife read that so many wanted to help out she teared up. Good job Chris for making him a lifetime member. That was a very generous offer and I would have taken him up on it if I hadn't found some parts to get us going. Kudos to the members on here.

Thanks for the sentiment though.......

Well weekend is a bust. F#cking thing runs great for about a mile then it quits. Let it sit for a bit and it will run for about 30 seconds then quit again. Me and my buddy's got to looking under the head light pod where all the plugins are and it's all taped up, spliced together. Glad that b&stard was honest about that. Guess me and my boy are going to double up on mine and make the most of the weekend.

Here is our honest snowmobiler of the year. Facebook him, Dylan Croff. In one of his pictures it shows the cash I paid him.

Your sled wasn't the black and yellow one that looked like it was piled up in the trees on Feb 26th was it?

I am very impressed with the overall support of those on this site. Way to step up guys!

No this isn't that sled. We did get it going, found a couple of butt splices that were loose. He rode it and had a blast.
