Why the %&(*&% can't a Canadian buy a Sled In USA?

I want to buy a new sled and I see it works out to be about $2000.00 cheaper in when bought in the USA and pay the difference. What is wrong with this picture?????

No problem. Just get a US address - you can rent a mailbox at MailBox Etc. or such which will then give you a valid US address. Some US dealers will still be a PITA but others will be most grateful to have the business.

Big prob with NEW US purchased sled is warranty work - has to be done in the US (as I understand it). If you live close to the border its not as big an issue if you are prepared to drive back and forth - in this case you must follow the full export rules - prior to initial export you will have to forward requisite forms to US customs / border crossing in advance (72 hours I think) and stop at the US side on the way out with the sled so that in the event that you have to return for warranty work the sled has the proper / complete export history.

Have purchased 2 new sleds, new quad, new SUV, several used boats and sleds from the US with no issues - just follow the rules.

Don't worry ... I spend more than enough "locally" - over a $2000 + at the local dealership on parts and accessories this season thus far (better margins than the actual sled / bike / auto).

Don't BS re medicare, EI, or anything else ..... Gov't Canada still received 13% HST on all of my purchases regardless of whether it was purchased in Canada or outside (plus $210 RIV fee for each). My 13 % on US purchases support Cdn gov't programs the same as your 13% on local purchases. Oh yes FYI, EI is funded by the employee and the employer (of which I am one) and not by GST / PST / HST. Get your facts straight before you post!

l do have a problem with a dollar at or near par since summer 2008 yet the manufacturers still have a 20 to 30% spread in the retail prices between US and Canada on identical products. If you can save 20 or 30% across the boarder then go for it!

I bought both of our sleds in the USA, I'm sure I saved over 5 grand after all is said and done. I did buy an aftermarket warrenty for my 08 Dragon, but I'm still ahead by a long shot. I can understand Polaris and Arctic cat charging us more as American companies. But it really bugs me that Bombadier gets Canadian government grants and still soaks us on pricing!!!

Everything is cheaper in the States....not exactly breaking news. Why? Because it's a completely different country and economy that just happens to be nearby geographically. Why is everything more expensive in Europe compared to Canada?

That said, by the book you can't buy a new vehicle in the states without a US address. Same problem when the dollar is the other way....US citizen can't buy brand new in Canada either.

cd vs us

I posted this on a diff. thread too but I could not find a deal across the line that would make it worth the trip. 2010 M8sp all taxes 2yr warranty and low elevation kit included was $13,340 and about 14miles down the road. Some `09`s on here at around $9,000 but there`s no way thats even a comparison. Gotta pay taxes and fees at border and gotta get to sled and back home again and that isn`t free either.

I hear ya....

I looked into it as well since the internet prices were so much cheaper... but all of the Ski-Doo dealers I spoke to over the phone would not and could not sell to me for the fear of losing their dealer licence. It is particularly bothersome when you look at the Bombardier sleds made in Canada and then exported to the US (as someone already stated). A buddy of mine bought a sled in the US (08 Summit 800) and the engine went on it. The dealer here said it is a common problem with 08 800s and that they are replacing 4-5 motors a week during the peak. Bombardier will not help him out since he bought it in the US. So he is going to sell it and never buy Ski-Doo again. Is it really worth losing customers over?
And why are vehicles the big exception to the NAFTA?

PS

PS I bought new and local for the warranty issue for the record.
The dealer here has terrible service though so I am still travelling to other towns for paid service work.... pisser.
Should be able to buy wherever the hell you want.

I bought my wifes 07 600 RMK on E-bay with 12 miles for $5600 US, got my 08 800 Dragon from a member of this site for $10700 US. The price in Canada at the time for the Dragon was $14500 plus GST. With RIV fees, exchange, and tax my Dragon was less than $12000 Canadian. My trip was like a free holiday!!

Not going to dispute what you saw for a price but I wonder how many out there ever had to pay THAT MUCH for an 800 Dragon? That was likely full msrp. Are they actually selling any at that price?

way stupid with our fair trade agreements. Americans can buy in Mexico though Quads and Rhinos

At that time the Dragons were just coming out and buddy from work made a deal on a non delivered snowcheck for $14500 plus GST, so thats where I got that price. Can hardly give them away now with all the bad luck some are having with them, glad mine rips. Still wouldn't think twice about buying a sled south of the border though.
