put a new top end on and now im overheating. checked coolant, and plugs. maybe bad gas? any ideas would help.

did you have the front end elevated when you filled it up......air lock.
Maybe: Air lock in cooling system, get the front end higher than back end. Run it until operating temp and then cool down, repeat and should get air lock out.
Yea, what they said. Get the nose higher than the rear cooler. Run it, put your hand on the rear cooler, you will know when it starts to circulate. Then top it off, good to go.
Might want to put a temp gauge on it if all you have is a light, it's to only way to go.

Sounds like a coolant circulation thing in terms of a air lock/bubble. Should be able to feel for coolant flowing (warm temp) all the way around the cooling system.
h2o pump belt or air lock
if it has excessive pressure when u pop the coolant cap, then like was mentioned pinched o-ring in head will cause it to over heat.
