Why am I only pulling 8020?

Been trying to figure this out, and am stumped. It seems like I am hitting a wall at this rpm on a digital guage.

02 800 SLP twin pipes
430/420 jets
64g with black w/red stripe
team roller with red spring and 40 helix(not even sure if I am even close to a good setup on this. belt seems a bit too warm, but still getting great life out of them.)

I think I am still a little fat on jets, going to ride it and see if i can go down one more jet size, but not sure if something in my clutching is stopping me from reaching higher RPM.

bottom and mid range is great, just not pulling out on the top end. I tried 62's for a bit and was still hitting the same rpm when i was down lower with 440/430 jets.

I'm hoping this is a "hey Idiot, this is where you're off" type deal. lol:face-icon-small-con

Ok so went out today, dropped jet sizes and made a difference, and especially yesterday in the shop, I was hitting target rpm perfectly on the stand. Thought I had a pretty good chance of being good to go. But once I got up riding today, I was still turning low rpms riding, and when I went to check my belt temps, it was too hot to keep my hands on. But my buddy basically has the same set up and his is running great, so we switched secondaries and it it reduced my belt temps a bit, but my driven clutch really reduced his temps, and he loved the switch, I just gotta get my clutch off his machine now.

So I'm thinking weak primary spring, even though it is basically new? I have another primary clutch I'm going to set up with new and see what happens.

Any thoughts if I'm going on the right track or not?

any opinions on the wash?

going to get the new primary spring and put in on the stand to see what i get later today also.

Wash looks descent for recreational ride. You have good color on spark plugs?
Go to a heavier-20lbs primary spring.
Old or worn out drive shaft bearings could keep your rpms down.
Check and adjust clutch alignment, shim secondary for float on jackshaft
this will raise your peak rpm, adjust with your primary weights per elevations.
adjust throttle cable to max opening on the carbs
Hope this helps ya,

It's tough to read plugs any more to jet with modern fuels. You can get an idea if you are insanely rich or lean, but that's about it. You are plenty close enough to rule out jetting as the reason that you aren't puuling the R's, though. As Zilla said, it's in your clutching.

All of that washed area around the bottom shouldn't be there. It should be black. That indicates too rich, because the incoming A/F mixture is washing the carbon away. Two little pinky fingernail sized clear areas is your target condition.

Are you still running the '02 needles? If so....and if your riding 3-7k ft (Wa), I would stay with 430 mains, needles in the middle. Don't go by wash, do full throttle chop/plug reads to assess your main jets, wash takes WAY too long to visually change.
Clutching run the 10-64's, Almond round spring, Team with a red/pink and a 58/40.46 helix.
If this is low on RPM drop to 10-62's. Shoot for 8200+ with the SLP pipes.
This is a well proven setup, if this doesn't give you results then it's not a jetting or clutching issue.

That is a good point about the wash. I should have mentioned that.
It is more of a long term engine health indicator than a short term jetting change clue.

Still, trying to determine jetting from a plug chop will have you chasing your tail. Your jets are plenty close enough to run great. That machine is not particularly finicky about absolutely precise jetting.

thanks for the advice, it ended up being the temp sensor on its way out. replaced it and running like a top.:face-icon-small-hap

Also winter brew thank you for advice on the secondary set. haven't tried it yet but hopefully next week.
