WHoop-Um-Up trail to Edna Campground trail closure sign - Idaho City Area

If you snowmobile out of the Whoop-Um-Up parking lot and want to travel towards Edna Creek Campground via the connecting trail, you have a Forest Service sign that says you can't do it. The sign is about 1/3 of the way to the campground. It states no motorized vehicles, including atv's, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. Last winter it wasn't there and as the trail enters Edna Creek Campground cement posts block the trail entrance from that end. In the area of the cement posts are signs that say not atv's and motorcycles, but nothing about snowmobiles. Getting around the posts isn't a problem. The problem is the Idaho City groomer has used this trail to access the Edna Creek road, that gives you access East towards Jackson Peak and the North Fork of the Boise River. This trail is the only off highway way to get to the Edna Creek road, unless you want to travel hwy. 21 for a short distance. Behind the sign and at the bottom of the hill is a trail that comes in from the south and maybe that trail is for non-motorized use and the sign is just placed **wrong**? I'm going to contact the Forest Service tomorrow to check it out and I will come back with the Forest Service response. Jens - Region 4 Director ISSA

I thought there where two trails. One, is by the entrance to the parking lot. the other is at the far east side of the parking lot. Of course, that might not be an official trail. :)

They'll get someone killed trying to go down hwy21.

I think you might also be able to go the the west side of 21, and make your way down to Edna.

Still checking on situation.

I call Idaho City Forest Service and after talking with two people I was transferred to the acting district ranger's voice mail, but he will be out of town til Monday. The Idaho City groomer coordinator group is having a meeting with the Forest Service next Tuesday and I will bring this issue up for discussion. Their is a chance this closure was done in regards to a scoping period previously done and this closure was done in response to this Forest Service procedure. A closure sign is placed one year in advance of the scheduled closure. I'm going to speak with the Boise National Forest office in Boise about this closure for their input. I've been snowmobiling in this area for many years and this is the only trail I've ever used to access Edna Creek road. I know of no other trail in the Whoop-Um- Up area that does what this trail does. If you do, please let me know.

Maybe resolved.

I also spoke with Idaho Parks and Recreation about this situation and was told that the Idaho City groomer needed access to Edna Creek road from the Whoop-Um-Up parking lot and their has been some emails back and forth between the Forest Service and Idaho Parks and Recreation. Looks like the no snowmobile sign will go but will have final word after our meeting next Tuesday. Their is still the issue of no motorized atv or motorcycle traffic on this trail during any time of the year. I'll give you the latest report after next weeks meeting in Idaho City.

Snowmobiling Issue Resolved.

Today, we had a meeting at the Forest Service office in Idaho City. The acting Idaho City District Ranger for the Forest Service, Idaho Parks and Recreation person, Idaho City Groomer Committee, Boise County Commissioner, Idaho ATV Association person, Region 4 Director for the Idaho State Snowmobile Association, and Boise Snowmobile Club members were at the meeting. The Forest Service wants to stop the degradation of the small stream that atv's and motorcycles cross to enter Edna Creek Campground and then travel to the Edna Creek road. ***We were told that the cement posts and the snowmobile no access sign will be removed this week by the Forest Service.*** This will allow the groomer to groom the trail and allow trail use by snowmobiles. Next Summer the Forest Service will look for a new atv and motorcycle trail and/or bridge to cross the stream and eliminate stream degradation. Everyone at the meeting worked well together and the result for snowmobiling was positive. Jens - Region 4 Director for ISSA and Boise Snowmobile Club member.

Whoo-Um-UP trail sign

Jens, I have to admit i came away from that meeting today with a warm fuzzy feeling, now Suzy wants to know how her Jeep got so dirty just driving up to Idaho City for a meeting. Don't you dare tell her.
Great job all around, thanks for the help.

Greg

Important - Cement posts still there.

During the meeting on 12/1/09 with the Idaho City Forest Service, we were told that the cement posts and "No Snowmobiling" sign would be taken down that week. I called the Idaho City Forest Service office on 12/7/09 to verify that the removal action was complete. I could only leave a voice mail message, with my phone number, for the person I needed to speak with. I've not received any returned phone call as yet. Yesterday, 12/10/09, I was told by a friend that the cement posts are still there, but he didn't go up the trail to see if sign was still there. Last night, I called the Idaho Parks & Recreation person that was at the Idaho City Forest Service meeting and can verify that the posts and sign were supposed to be taken down. Since the office was closed, I could only leave a message and my phone number for a response. I will find out what's going on and post the information I receive. Jens - Region 4 Director ISSA.

Cement posts and sign should go this week?

I got a call from the Forest Service in Idaho City yesterday and the person I spoke with was told the posts and sign were removed. I described to him the locations of the posts and sign that were still there and he stated he would go up this week to see about getting them removed for sure. Sign is easy to remove but posts are in frozen ground. Will keep you posted. Jens Region 4 Director ISSA.

Concrete posts

Well 12/18/09 the concrete post are still in place, so we groomed through the Ednah Creek campground in a spot to the right of them.

No Snowmobile Sign is gone.

The no snowmobile sign is gone between Whoop-Um-Up and Edna Creek Campground. The cement posts are still in place but the groomer takes a different route. This new route bi-passes the cement posts and they are no longer a factor, unless you go the old way across the creek. We took orange poles to mark the cement posts as a hazard and hope that will work as a warning. That's all folks. Jens Region 4 Director ISSA.

I camped up there in August. I heard them working over at the top of the trail. I went over to check it out and the Forest Service was installing the signs with cement. They told me they would remove them when it snowed. I asked them if they planed on digging them out or if they wanted I would winch them out for them.:)
