Whistlers sea to sky Highway closed for at least 5 days

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 – 4 p.m.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION – Sea to Sky Highway Closure on July 30 OVERVIEW On July 29 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a rockslide closed the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Porteau Cove and the Furry Creek Bridge. The slide debris covered both lanes of the highway and damaged the CN rail tracks beside the highway. The slide was outside of any current highway construction areas. The highway will be closed until further notice. B.C. Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon stated (mid afternoon July 30) that it could take up to five days.
We have been informed (2:30 p.m. July 30) by the Ministry of Transportation that their geotechnical engineers are onsite assessing the stability of the slope above the slide and that clean-up will begin once the engineers determine that the site is safe. Once clean-up begins, workers will do everything they can to reopen the highway as soon as possible. Due to the size of the boulders, the clean-up will involve blasting. NOTE: Up-to-date information about the details of the slide and time that the area will re-open should be obtained from the Ministry of Transportation or the RCMP as this information is changing regularly.

Yeah its true, stranded in Squamish and the rest of the Sea to Sky corridor. They say 5 days but i'm guessing its going to be 7-10 days. They started blasting today and there will be more coming plus they still need to clear the debris and bolt the cliff still. The gas stations were out of gas for a bit today, lots of people that cant get to work as the only other option is to fly out or drive 8 hours the long way to work.

ouch ! i think i felt my tax's going up again , with all the crashes and misshaps on that road the rest of us b.c. ers 'll buy you a new safer one that i'll probley never travel

That corner looks familiar, was a great empty bladder stop, hopefully that did not cause the erosion:confused:.Hopefully no one was under that, that road should be called the kamakazi road. Cheers Red Dog

There is an emergency ferry dock about 100 feet South of the rockslide which is useless because we are North of it.As well their is a dock in Squamish but its unsafe to use as it hasn't been used/maintained since a mill was shut down.About the Olympics, the traffic for last weeks Pemberton Festival had 40000 people attend over a 4 days period and the traffic was a total disaster for the weekend, even after the construction the commute will suck for anyone trying to get to any 2010 Events from the city,if your staying in Squamish,Whistler,Pemberton it wont be as bad.
