Which Track?? 162" or 174"

Looking at building a Turbo APEX. Should I spend the extra $300 and go to the 174" Camo Extreme or is the 162" Camo Extreme good enough??

Also, what needs to be done to run a 3" paddle?? D&R or just smaller drivers??

I don't know about the 162" vs. 174" but I think you would need to use an extended chaincase (like the one from Avid) because the distance between the jackshaft and drive shaft is too close to fit a 3" paddle regardless if it is d&r'd. Plus, I don't think anyone makes a 6 tooth 3" pitch driver.

You will be amazed at the added floatation of the 174" track.

One of the most important components to really use the horse power is to reduce the wheelie affect. The 174 really helps, strait rails will help a lot too.

I can putt putt through the trees whithout spinning the track while the guys around me are full throttle doing all they can just to keep going. The 174 floats!!

One of the guys I ride with has the same sled Apex, same track (camo extreme 2.5") but the 162"; same stock rear suspension and he is riding a wheelie machine. It looks neat but he cannot climb with my 174" apples to apples it is not even close. He wheelies over and I keep going.

Once I put strait rails on or straighten my stock rails it will be even worse or better for me.

If u don't care about getting "over" the top or out hi-marking ALL of your buddies - get the 162;

U want to be KING above tree line, at least for us, then 174 it is.

track length is directly related to personal pref, aka riding style...there will always be pros n cons.
but, with proper suspension setup and STRAIGHT rails, shorter tracks can work (for controlling the skili factor). but obviously, the more boost/power you add the more it will be an issue.

i still wish i could at least economically 'try' a shorter (156") track from time to time.
but in the DEEEEEP days, the 162x16x2.5 is great..other days, its not.

for crawl style boondocking, the more track surface area (and less weight) will obviously help.
and the steeper and deeper it gets, longer is better..

but you still can't convince me that manuaverability (or carvability) isn't decreased with longer (and wider) tracks..

THUS, most of track length / width decisions and discussion continue to be personal choice.

Well said---shorter 15 wide tracks are a ton of fun and with a well set up suspension ski lift is no issue. Sometimes we compensate with longer wider tracks for a poor set up.

For me the biggest issue is the fun factor of a 153 by 15 track.:D

CC - I rode both last year quite a bit. To me , the number one thing is to get rid of the Yammi tipped up rails. The 174 is the CE 2.5 and the 162 is the Powderclaw 2.5 x 15. The big fella (6'4 1/2, 345 lbs) owns the 174 and he needs that extra length. With the OEM skid w/tipped rails and 162 he was a wheelie machine. With the 174, straight rails, not an issue. I personally like the 162 PC with the straight rails for overall maneuverability. I guess it really depends on what type of riding you do the most of and what your body size is. You should be able to get a great match. The 174 should fit without difficulty if that is the route that you choose. Good luck, let me know if there is anything that I can help with, on my 3rd Apex currently, have done boost (SC and Turbo) and have done lightweight NA.

I run 174's on all. But like others have said depends on your riding style and the terrain you ride. We get huge snow and in that 3 foot of fresh, the 174 is like cheating. Def gives up some manouverability, but hey when the 186 comes out, the 174 will feel like a 151:eek:
Safe boostin':beer;

I remember last year camoplast was lookin at 200"+!

186 is gunna be the short track!!
