GoPro Hero Wide Motorsports

Just got a GoPro Hero Wide Motorsports from Helmetcameracentral.com and used it for the first time this weekend. It's an awesome camera for under $200 shipped, including a free 2GB memory card. Go to youtube and do a search for GoPro Hero helmet cam and watch the videos to get an idea of the quality. Make sure you click on "watch in high quality" below the screen. Some videos will be the wide angle model, some will be standard. Wide just picks up more on the screen in case you don't have it aimed perfectly. It also gives a better perception of speed. It is waterproof down to 100feet, which is more than most. Some are rated to 10 feet, and some are just splash resistant. I think the VholdR is only splash resistant?? Don't quote me on that though. It does not have a playback screen so you have to plug it into a TV or computer to see what's on it. That's why I decided to get the Wide version so it just picks up everything and I don't have to wonder if I got the shot. The sound is good for motorsports- it picks up engine noise fine when mounted to your helmet, and doesn't pick up hardly any wind noise. I did notice it picks up too much vibration when you use the suction cup mount to stick it to your tunnel and leave the sound setting on "High". I figured that out this weekend. I guess you're supposed to put it on "Low" when you attach the camera directly to the machine. I'll try that next time. If you take the camera out of the waterproof case, it picks up normal sound like a conversation a lot better. You can also remove the lens seal if you're not going to dunk it, and it helps the sound. If you just stick the thing on your helmet and ride, the sound is just fine though.

Most of this info can be found on that helmetcameracentral.com site. Helmetcamreviews.com does a good comparison between the four most popular "self-contained" cameras (which are the less expensive group of helmet cameras).

I'll try to get some of my clips posted this week. Here's a video filmed with a GoPro to get you started:

I bought the Hero MS helmet camera and have used it 4 times. I don't like the fish eye lense ~ and it seems to have a little stutter - at least it doesn't seem to play back smoothly. "maybe that's my computer, I have not tried it on another computer."

In very bright sunlight you have really dark areas that's a pain but if you use the camera during snow/no sun it has good picture. Tough call - for a $180 it's ok, but I think I'll try the "standard" Hero and see what the field of view turns out to be. D

So far my playback hasn't had any stuttering. I did notice that after editing with Windows Movie Maker on my home computer, a couple clips in the first movie I saved had some weird "pixelation" in the darker areas at one point, and then it went away after more editing. Then on my work computer, there was no sign of anything like that. Could be the video card, could be the version of Movie Maker- who knows. Like you I noticed some shots turned out a little darker. I just did the "increase brightness" effect in that specific clip and it took care of it without washing out the lighter areas.

I would like to see them make a lense with about a 90-110 degree angle for the GoPro. I think that would be a good compromise between the 54 and 150 (or whatever the wide one is). The 54 is too narrow in my opinion though.

it was a tough decison to pick.. so now I ordered Vholdr.. I looked at all the video that i saw. Vholdr is alright. thanks guys.

pov1 is great but the software is lame!works good with the loop feature and remote to capture good stuff!saves a bunch of useless footage for sure!

go to www.youtube.com and type in for vio or vholdr, or whatever u pick.. i bought vholdr cam, it look alright on video. the hero cam have wide angle video its awesome. you may try and check it out

Another Option

Just thought I would make a sugestion. The ICAM has alot gowing for it. Versatility-You can use multiple styles of cameras as the seasons change. (not everything happens with a helmet on)
Great Video Quality- 720x480 (DV quality)
No proprietary software-records a standard AVI file on an SD card can be edited with Windows Media Player if you want.
I could go on but just might want to check the sight www.icamdvr.com your self.

Any questions let me know.
