When the risk is high why take it??

Rode in Cooke City this last weekend in MT... wittnessed the uncovery of the body from a avy victum. I believe he had a becon but they couldn't find a signal because he didn't have it turned on. It wasn't until the next day they found him with dogs probably about 12 feet under the snow... There were 3 here in Montana this last weekend. I can't believe people take the risk when the avy danger is high. Why would you put your family and friends through that..... I just don't get it.. I could not believe that was the only victum in cooke this weekend with all the high marking.... RIDE SMART AND BE SAFE!!!!

Good picture. Thanks for that. Nasty looking slope!!!! Yet guys are still hitting it.
Believe me...you're not the only one who doesn't get it! That to me is simply suicide.

I heard his wife was there when they found him...:( I have NEVER seen anyone ride that side of daisy and all my 5 years of riding Cooke. From the looks of it, everyone was taking there turn that sad day. RIP Travis.

i do not beleive travis had any family with him. the report said he was riding with friends in cooke. the one you are thinking of where his wife was with him was down in the gravelly range near west fork. travis was a great person to be around and im sure he died doing something he loved. he will be remembered by all of us...

RIP, very sad

There is NFW I would have tried that slope in these snow conditions....be smart to hit it another day

I am sad to say Travis's wife was with him when it happened. She was one of the first to do a beacon search and she was there when they got him out. They have a 6 month old son. I don't know the reasoning behind his thinking but I do know he is usually a safe guy. If you look at the pic on the mt avalanche site there are tracks all over that mountain. His sled got stuck and in the process of freeing it, it rolled and struck a rock causing the slide. Just please everyone be safe. Remember it can happen to YOU!

RIP Travis. Take care of him for us Jesus.

Very sad story, strength to all the family/friends left behind.

I hope this is not in-appropriate here, but just to re-enforce as a very recent reminder:
My brother and I were out Saturday in the mtns and just before we headed up to elevation I did ask him if he had his beacon on him and he said of course, and then he said oh Sheet and turned it on.
We were pretty careful that day and thankfully did not need to use our safety equipment.
Been said before, but once more;
We are all only human and mis-cues happen to any and all of us at some time.
I really enjoy Mountain terrain riding and may not quit any time soon so
I practice not to be affraid to ask the silly safety drill questions of riders in the party no matter the experience of those in our group. Not always easy to take the heat, but most get the base intent these days.

Very sad indeed. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Please be safe out there guys, those slopes can wait - if it doesn't feel right to you, let your group know, be outspoken and let your voice be heard!

Live to ride it another day or year!

We had some guys climb a place where a guy had gotten killed a few years ago and they were sidehilling across and that is the way the guy set it off. I will get pictures of it this weekend.

Yes his wife was there with him. It is sad for this to take place, I don't wish it on anyone! But damn, there was a avy on the other side of the mountain that slid probably the day before... If that ain't saying something like, its not safe, don't climb..... both sides that slid were both wind loaded.... Maybe people just have to wittness something like that like I did to get the point across....
Even though none of us in our group does any hill climbing we still practice with our becons by doing simulations of someone being burried almost every time we go out riding.... you never know when you will need to put your skills to the test.... And hopefully we will never have to!!!
