When did you start riding the Mountain Backcountry?

I know there are some oldtimers out there with great stories! My dad started riding in the mountain backcountry in the mid 70's, and the whole family has been riding ever since! Someone had the great idea to take a camera with them, so I've just finished scanning in a great bunch of photos from that time. There's stories attached to each one.

Now I'm sure there are more stories and photos out there, lets see them!

Wow, those pictures are awesome. I didn't start riding until I moved out from Atlanta to Montana in 1995. Did a couple road rides with some friends but stuck to snowboarding at The Big Mountain (Whitefish Resort... stupid new name) until I destroyed my right knee. That year my buddy sold me his 88 Polaris 340 Indy Sport for $500... the snowboards have been collecting dust ever since.

The progression has been pretty steady:
88 Polaris 340 Indy Sport
92 Polaris 500 Indy
00 Polaris 700 RMK
04 AC 900 1M Mountain Cat
08 AC M1000
08 WR450 Mountain Horse

This year was my first downsize in engine displacement.... and holy hell was it worth it! Back-country on the MH has been a blast.

I started 26 years ago -1st sled yamaha 250 Bravo

It rocked the MTN, even survived rolling down avalanche (name of hill) 27 times , only bent the bars. it was made of steel literally!

24 years ago on a Yamaha Bravo--still have it!!! It will be my kids third sled. My boy (age 6) has gone from a kitty kat to a 120 so far.

Those are great! Brings back some memories. That pic of the sleds stuck in a foot of snow on a moderate slope shows how far the sleds have come. The motoski drop looks like a backbreaker!!
I started riding when i was 4 in 1972.

1979 - My parents started taking me in a small sleeping bag, sitting on the gas tank. Started riding my own machine in the mountains around 1985. I'll have to scan in some old photo's one of these days. Good times!

1975 on a Polaris TX500, in deep snow could spend all day and never get out of sight of the parking lot.

Started in 1976 on my dad's 72 Cheetah. Riding the fields around the house.

Starting riding logging roads and playing in the mtns in 1980 on the Cheetah, the best sled ever made until the 1981 John Deere Liquifire 440. HAHA
We also had a 73 Puma 399 and a 67ish Skidoo. We had 70's Scorpion for a while too.

I RODE that 72 Cheetah for 20 years, until 1996. the guy I sold it to still has it, I believe. I'd love to take it for a spin.

My first ride was the fall of 1983 on my 1982 polaris 440 txc. That sled opened up the mountains for me and changed my life.

My Dad started around '02 or '03 when his brother gave him a Ski-Doo Skandic 500 that he took to the mountains. (Not sure on the year of the sled)

He quickly realized he needed to upgrade and bought a '99 600 Summit with a 131" under it and stretched it to a 144" until he upgraded to the M7 that we still have! Upgraded to a brand new 2008 M8 two years after he bought the M7 used and is now riding a 2012 Pro-Climb M800 Retro!

I started on the Skandic too, just around our backyard, then he bought the M7 and got rid of the Skandic, kept the Summit 600 for me to ride and he rode the M7. He took me out to the fields around the house, places like that. Then he bought the M8, he took me to the mountains for the first time with me on the M7 when I was 13, 3 years ago, my mind was blown. I'm probably hooked for life now.

I ride a 2012 M800 Retro now and so does he... They were built on the same day, they've both been 100% trouble free and now we're better than ever!
