Whats the skinny on the GM 6.5L diesel?

Looking at a couple that are real clean and the price seems good. Power? Mileage? Problems?

If you have a big boat they make excellent anchors. Put aside a couple grand to have the injector pump replaced. Cuz it's gonna need one. Then as soon as you drain the I-pump account start over again. Cuz as soon as you have the cash saved, the new on is gonna yak too. Sure they aren't reliable but they do make up for it by having very little torque and I'm pretty sure they were rated at negative horsepower.

although this post is 100% accurate, the 6.5 is not a completely bad truck. They ride real smooth and look good. As long as you aren't towing anything or actually requiring it to be mobile, it is a good truck. Sitting in one place, it may be one of the nicest trucks ever built.

Hahaha!! Ya I guess I have seen some of them that look ok. Course if they were out in the trenches they'd be all marked up and battle scarred. Go find yourself and old Cummins powered Dodge. Sure they have all the handling and ride characteristics of a 1914 Fargo meat wagon but they are essentially indestuctible. Cummins engine right out of a heavy truck, NV4500 5-speed out of a tow truck, NP205 transfer case that was used in everything from a truck to a skidder. Dana 60's front and back. "Leaf" spring (solid steel blocks that have no spring what so ever) suspension. Beefy frame. They are some tuff machines. 1993 and older they do come pretty cheap. Prolly got over 1/2 a million on the clock but still.

oil pressure sensors seem to fail alot.the sensor also triggers the lift pump,so when they go bad youll have hard starts and eventually ruin the ip.my buddies 6.5 has this issue and just dies randomly.

the best advice on this whole page.

Hmm Dudes,

do some checking around. Teh injection pumps are only 800 dollars rebuilt. I have a 6.2 that has roughly 600k ON TEH ORG MOTOR AND PUMP.

John,

the 6.2 and 6.5's are not that bad. it pisses me off when I see people dissing the 6.2'sand 6.5s if you dont own one keep your mouth shut!!!!

you dont own one keep your mouth shut!!!!

jeez settle down buddy.i see you own a 6.2 so why should you be offering advice.lol.i don't think they are bad..but the 94-2000 6.5 with the electronic stanadyne pumps have a few issues.cummins didnt switch to the electronic pump till 98.5 and those suck too.each manufacture obviously has there good and bad.a p pump 12 valve cummins is a way better truck for the money.

I am not a chev basher because they are still my favorite truck. I can't believe that I actually own a Ford but it has been a rock for 5 years ( 2001 7.3).

I used to own a 6.5 and I sure never got an injector pump rebuilt for $800. The lucky owners of Stanadyne Corporation had a few holidays from the money I spent of 4 injector pumps in 4 years. Every 13 months, the pump would let go.

i've always had good luck with them had three of them on of which is a 95 and it has 400k on it, they get good milage about 19 on this one and they have comparable power to any other diesel of their years, which most people will argue with based off the Dodge Cummins side. But I've had both and the only real difference i've noticed is that the old cummins( 12 valve) just felt like it had alot of power because of all the low end torque but after about 30 mph they both pulled a trailer full of cows the same

O and by the way if your lookin for the nicest ride, I would'nt even look at the old dodges unless you really like going to the chiropracter cause they're freakin rough

6.5's have a couple of issues. No matter how old the truck is, check with GM to see if the injector pump was ever changed under a long standing campaign. If it never was, get it changed. GM will pay the cost. Next, the PMD (pump mounted driver) was really bad at failing. The truck just stops like you turned off the key. It's mounted on the injector pump and used the diesel fuel running behind it to keep it cool. They get hot and stop working. There are companies that state that that changing the resistor in the connector at the PMD will add a little more fuel and increase the HP. I was told not to do it so I never did. I bought a PMD relocation kit but it never made a difference. I used to keep an extra PMD in the glovebox. They aren't boat anchors but the certainly not the LBZ or LMM modern diesel engine. But an air intake and exhaust and it's a good starting point for your first diesel.

6.5l

get an early version as late models the blocks crack early on in life! Big exhaust,HO h2o pump,boost fool,relocate pmd;good to go some of the old ones 6-900000 kms:beer;

I did the relocation thing as well. The result was the pump lasted 13 months instead of 13 months it would have lasted without the relocation kit. Money well spent :(
