What's the deal with the A/F Gages

Just an observation here.

Looks like people have more darn trouble with the A/F ratio gages than they ever had with the old school EGT's.

I have seen more, I was at 13 point whatever and then bam stuck the piston, or I can't get this thing to work, how do I calibrate this, or will 2 stroke oil affect it, etc.

I am glad I have the old reliable run it to 1250 and no more than that EGT's.

I know there is a place for A/F but I am not to sure we have it figured out yet.

AFR are for tuning only. EGT are for tuning and monitoring. I think some of the problems with AFR (on 2 strokes) come from using them as a monitoring device.

My .02, it's a newer technology going through growing pains until it gets to the level EGTs get to. I've found out some brands are maybe better than others at this point in the game. As with anything new there are going to be questions and problems.

i set my plugs/wash to my egts...i established that i really would not like to go above 1260 degrees for any amount of time...so 1260 is my top baseline operating safe temp that is verified by my plug and piston reading...i installed my af guage and i am amazed at how it compliments my earlier work with the egt...i do run a bit hotter mid range and my 02 guage reads 13 to 13.5 in this range as well...i run safe egts a wot and the 02 guage is smack on at 12.2...so i could lean a tiny bit but i think i will stay put...but yea its nice to corrolate...i think a person can remove the probe and plug the hole and turn off the power and just rehook up once in a while to make sure the status quo is the same...but egts are awesome...the 02 is fun and interesting...as long as they work for a time...i really do notice that heat sink staying very hot after the pipe is cooling and i mounted mine at 10 oclock at the fat part of pipe and made shims to get the flow directly in line with the exhaust path...and im using redline oil which is very clean...so so far so good...i hope it continues to operate
