We have used from time to time EVERY layering piece that we sell on our site, and there are a couple that seem to outsell the other options and people keep coming back to upgrade to the new designs year after year. All of this combined with our own thoughts make us believe that these are some great choices.

FLY RACING MID LAYER

FXR VERTICAL SOFTSHELL

HMK TECH 2

KLIM INFERNO

MOTORFIST HYDROPHOBIC

All of these options have a pant that goes with them made of a similar fabric, and there are also many options that are a less technical piece made of fleece. Let us know if you have any questions based off of what you see here!

I use the North Face Polartec top and bottoms unless it is extremely cold, then I use Klim Everest top and bottom. Very pleased with both.

Mid winter colder then crap weather:

Upstairs

Outer: Sherpa Waterproof shell (with hood for lunch breaks)
Inner: Light down vest with tekvest type protection vest
Under Inner: Under armor cold gear with non cotton t-shirt.

When it gets warmer, shed a layer or two. In my opinion the most outer layer and the most inner layer is the most critical. Its amazing how little clothing you can wear when you have the best quality outer and inner layers on. Makes nasty riding conditions very comfortable.

Down stairs

Outer: KLIM freeride pants (by far the best snow pant available)
Inner: Some sort of padded bike short
Under Inner: Under armor cold gear pant

Feet

Boot: KLIM adrenaline boots (many good boots from other brands as well)
Socks: Stoic knee high winter wear socks (pricy for socks but Awesome!!!)

Point is to keep it simple, you end up putting on to many (thick) layers and you look like Ralphie and Randy on Christmas story, Wear as little as possible to stay warm in order to maintain mobility. For men its ok to wear spandex as long as its never seen in public. lol

Go to your local Target and get some of the fleece sweats in their mens dept. They 15 for the top and 15 for the bottoms. I love my Klim Shell but the cheap fleece on the mid payer works perfect

After trying tons of gear over the years I have found the two best options for me have been the KLIM Inferno Jacket for about 90% of my riding and for the cold days I like the KLIM Everest Jacket which I have used down to 35 below with an uninsulated coat.

Good luck in your search.

I have read this discussion. Is there a website to "compare" various gear?

One where you click compare on more than one jacket and the website lists them by column so you can see what the gear has to offer?

Klim Klimate vs the KLIM TOMAHAWK vs the Inferno etc.

Like to compare brands

hmmmmm, i just wear an a.r.c. uninsulated fowl weather dirtbike jacket over a cheap precision mountainwear fleece over a motocross jersey on top and arcitiva uninsulated bibs over generic sweat pants on bottom, maybe a set of thermal skivvies under that on extreme cold days.motocross socks and klim adrenaline boots for the feeties, can't skimp on the footwear if the toes get cold its a crappy day. this set up has worked for me, just can't see the point in spending $1k on pants and a jacket.
