What would you do?

Question for you guys.

A couple weeks ago we were riding on the backside of the snowies. We dropped into this meadow, played around, and on our way out of there, in the middle of nowhere was nice Backpack or tunnel bag, with a shovel, just laying there. We got off, looked around. We didn't see anyone around, but the track it was lying in looked pretty recent. So what do you do? Pick it up? Leave it? What?

We ended up leaving it there, thinking whoever lost it will notice it and backtrack looking for it. It would make me sick if who ever it was never found it when I could of picked it up for safe keeping. But then if you pick it up, then what? Leave it at the warming hutt? Parking lot? Store in town? or post it on here? Just curious what the right call would of been. I also hope who's ever it was found it and doesn't come on here asking me why I didn't pick it up.

Tough call, I'd pick it up and try to find the owner. There are some people that would just keep the pack, but I believe in Karma because it may happen to you.

I'd leave it, I don't think somebody would get too far before they realized that they had forgotten it. If there weren't many tracks, I might even try to track them down.

That is tough. I would look for owner information first. Then I would probably hang it up on a trailhead or close to where it was found for everyone to see easily. I'd also hope that some dope didn't grab it as a freebee (bad karma to do that).

From Rickster, tough call, the owner may not have noticed it missing until they got back to the truck and who knows if they would have backtracked by then. I would have looked inside to see if there was anything to identify the owner. It brings up a good point though as maybe you should put identifiers on or in the bag. Also send me a pm, I have a new email address. rickster

id probably leave it but follow the tracks for a little ways to see if i saw anybody around. If i did see them i'd let them know

Depends what was in the pack. IE: Drink the beer and leave a $20 and a thank you note:

On a more serious note: I depends on the situation, how fresh the tracks were. If it was fresh, maybe pick it up and try and catch up, or put it in a very visable spot, where they are likely to find it. Most people would turn around and look where they lost their pack. If it was been there a few days, maybe leave it at the parking lot, or put in a lost and found add here and the local paper.

I would try to follow the track if tracks are fresh.

Second I would take it with me and post it on here and call te local paper.

I would have at least went through it to see if you can find a wallet or some sort of way to contact the owner. I probably would have put it up at the trail head.

If there was contact info in the bag, I would have taken it and called the owner.

I would have taken it... Contacted the lodge and let them know how to get in contact with you, as well as post out here...

This also brings a good point to leave contact info in your packs/bags... Would make it alot easier to contact the owner when something like this happens... I know I will start this.

I would of left it to and just marked it on my GPS and tried to refind it again on my next trip. I would only do this after I went through it first too to see if I could ID the rightfull owner before leaving it.

Similar thing happened to me last weekend only I was on the other end of the deal. Left my tunnel bag unzipped after lunch and wound up dumping about $200+ worth of stuff on the trail. I returned a half hour later to get it and it was gone. The guy who picked it up noticed that the bag of firestarter had Cascade Drift Skippers on it (they were giving it away at their booth at the snow show). He contacted the members of the club thinking it belonged to one of them. He was also a member. One of the members had seen my post on SW about losing my gear. Got a couple of phone calls and emails just this morning and I'll get my stuff back tomorrow. I believe the some of my good karma just got transferred to them.

If there was a cabin/hut in the area I'd bring it there. A little new snow and the guy would never find it....

Tough call for sure

This actually happened to me 3 years ago at cooke with a couple of my fuel cans.. Had two 2 gallon jerry cans on my tunnel left cooke got up to were we were riding and both of them were gone.. lookd for a couple hours and never found them.. two mornings later somebody had picked them up and took them to where you hop on the trail leaving town.. still full.. found them and dumped them out just incase they were trying to be seaky and put something in the fuel.. but i thank the person that returned them whoever it was

Mark that spot with your GPS that you are carrying, Then the next time you are there you can see if it has been found or not.

BTW, Going out there next week, did you keep the GPS cordinates?

I do have the coordinates, and will check the area this weekend, but it could be buried under some good snow. It was about a 2 miles south east of the Warming hut, for those of you who know. Opening it up would have been a smart thing to do. Should of done that. I picked it up and there wasnt a name on the outside, so I just stood it up so it was more visible. It looked like a brand new FLY pack. Hope they found it. I thought about opening it up, but didnt want someone flying out of the trees thinking i was stealing something. ha ha ha.

I think next time I will grab it so I know for sure it finds the right owner. I know thats what I would want someone to do for me.

Thanks for the input guys.

After finding an (empty) pack last year on a trail, I typed our information for our packs on bright paper, laminated it and pinned it to the inside. If we ever lost ours I hope someone would return it. Replacing all that stuff is expensive.

I would take it with me and give it to the local club. Would not leave it in a hut or anything like that because there are too many people that would just as easily steal it out of there.
