What would you choose? M8 or M1000

I'm purchasing a new sled and have the choice between an M8 and M1000..

Same purchase price... Which sled would be best for all around riding in the mountains..

how much do you weigh, what kind of riding do you do, do you like to mod. I would go with a 09 m1000 over a 2010 m8 but I mod and weigh over 200lbs.

Will be keeping it stock for now.. 225 lbs...

New to Alaska... So not sure on the riding at this point... I have always looked for anything to jump and play in the powder as much as possilbe.. Like the hill climbs but won't spend my day at the bottom of a hill.

If your over 220lbs I would go with the M1000. They are both great sleds but you will want the extra grunt of the M1000.

I would go with a 09 m1000 162, put on a slp can and a 40/36 progressive helix and go from there.

what elevation?

If you are only riding below 5000 ft. i would go with the M8. The higher in altitude you get the more you will wish you had the thousand. I know my 800 at 1000 ft. is more than enough power. Take the same sled, clutch it properly for altitude and it is still very dissapointing when comparing it to the lower altitude power. If I rode above 5 k all the time I would have the thousand.

09 M1000 all the way! unless you are gonna boost it, then an 09 M8 would be my choice.

If there both 08's then id go with the 1000. the 08 m8 was kind of a dog and the 08 m1000 didnt transfer worth sh!t so the handleing was a little off, but you can fix the transfer problem with a little shock work and youll have a great sled.

On anything prior to 2010 I would go M1000. There is just too much difference in the power.

Go with the M1000 if you’re a big guy the sled will handle you better. and you'll like the Extra power.:face-icon-small-hap

First let me welcome you to Alaska. The riding here is mainly below 5,000' and around the area that you live you will most likely be riding in heavier coastal snow. We also do a lot of flat land riding in deep powder. I prefer the 800 with a 153 track. I think the HCR is the perfect Alaska sled.

Another vote for a 1000.

If you really like the air you might consider going with a crossfire, you get the stance that the HCR has(I like a narrower stance myself) without spending the extra $$ on an hcr, you get a sled that's a bit more fun to ride, and it's a bit better in the air.

We've owned each of the 1000's & the 08 was a solid sled, pretty easy to catch it up to an 09 imo.

the 08-07 m1000 aren't anywhere close to as capable to a 09, get the 09
<-- Keep dreaming, the changes weren't that drastic.

I'm 6'2" 160 lbs and have an 08 M1000 153" Sno Pro and love it. The thing about a bit extra power is that you don't always have to use it. The 1000 isn't as heavy as everyone will want you to believe, put on a can and it's the same weight as a stock M8. The torque of the 1000 is what sold me. I was not sure I wanted a 1000 till I rode one. For same purchase price, the decision is a no-brainer, get the 1000.

The M1000 does have a retail price that is well over $1,000 more than the M8.

So the M1000 would be a better buy but.........................

I weight 170 and rode both last winter (they were both 09 Sno Pros) and brought home the M8. The bigger guys seem to prefer the M1000 for the torque and I can understand completely.

The one M1000 I have ever rode was not set up as good as it could have been and I would still love to ride one that is but, in this case, the extra 30 lbs of the M1000 felt like it was all residing in the nose of the M1000 I rode.

Heck I don't know, they are both good sleds and you'll be happy with either.

Best of luck
