What would be the most efficient pull

Going on a 1200 mile trip what's gonna be the most efficient way to pull 3 sleds?

  • 3 sleds on a 20 ft 4 place trailer with 5 ft salt sheilds?

You may want to find a 20+ ft aluminum enclosed. The money and time it will take to clean everything will save you in the end. You can put all your gear in it as well. If you have to pull a trailer, pull a trailer. 1200 miles with a cover flaping on my sled...... OUCH!

The biggest efficiency gains will be from your right foot and if the wind conditions cooperate IMO.

Agreed...I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this. I would pick whichever is the easiest combo for you to load/unload, as the fuel econ will be splitting hairs.

Anything wide or tall is going to hurt your MPG and the faster you drive will compound the issue. short 7' wide enclosed is my choice but its not a option. 1200 mile on a open trailer your sleds are going to take a BEATING from salt.

1200 mile trip. No brainer to me. Like has been said, the fuel mpg will be flip a coin. For me its the 4place open. It will be far more stable at speed for that distance. Relax and go! Second point is should you get a trailer flat, the tandem axle trailer is much safer than a short tongued trailer that just dropped to a rim on one side! Hang on. Frees up the back of the truck for gear bags parts and tools and gas cans.

Cargo plane.
Use parachutes and have them drop u on top of the mountain!
It will use the most fuel though.

1200 mile round trip would be a short one for us. Are trips start at 1500 miles and go up from there. With that said, we have pulled about every combination possible. Open trailers DO NOT get better mileage and salt shields KILL your mileage. Even having covers on the sleds will cost you mpg.

The best set-up is a low roof height enclosed trailer. A 4 place floe with a protector cap on it is the best trailer I have every towed for fuel mileage.

I have pulled 4 place open, enclosed, 2 place enclosed floe and triton. Milage really did not matter. 9 to 11 running 70 to 75. I have a 21ft 7 wide enclosed steel united now. I can put 3 162's in it. My guess is that I am close to 6000 lbs loaded. Pull it with a 01 chevy 6.0. Best I got was 11 on a run with no wind. The wind is what is your enemy, I have pulled west and gotten 6 miles a gallon and had my oil change light come on after 800 miles(reset before I left).
If you want the best milage drive 65 max and hope there is no wind that day or hope for a tail wind.

I would say keep the sleds off a sled deck. That additional height will cost you mpgs. A 7ft wide enclosed that rides low would be your best bet but a 3 place open trailer would do the trick.

The best way to improve mileage is to keep the speed around 65 mph instead of 75/80. The air resistance increases at a geometric rate above 60 mph.

Best way to haul 3 sleds.. Is a 3 place trailer. I have a 16 ft open trailer and 3 sleds fit on there perfect. Drive 2 on forwards and back one on in between the two.

Here is the best way to haul 3 sleds.

This is not my pic. I saw this here on snowest and thought it was pretty cool.

I too want the most MPG. But...I'll take the convenience of my enclosed for three sleds. That way I can haul fuel, gear and extra parts. I'll pay an extra hundy or two to have it my way. I loved my sled deck but in your situation you would have to take the trailer off and unload then load the trailer back on and do it all over and over.

I like my 3 place enclosed even for two guys. Two sleds to ride plus a spare, storage for gear and what not and it is relatively secure storage on the trip and at home. Sleds haven't had road grime on them once.

Sled deck and a 12ft clamshell 2 place I'd think would be as fuel efficient you could get with 4 sleds and still have plenty of room for gear.
