What type of backup chain to buy

Remember how bad it sucks to ride on trails? I can't even imagine how bad it would suck to be towed out on a trail. I just want to be prepared, besides, I'll have to replace it eventually so it is effectively free.
 
Good 520 o-ring. Don't forget a chain break tool and pliers and some good wire(helps to get chain tight enough for master)
 
cut chain

I carry a spare but about to set it aside. but, cut it to fit, couple of master links.
Good o ring chain is a little tought to cut and punch out links in the field.

Going to start carrying a good chain breaker, couple extra links and masterlink.

Now, as mentioned many times, you chit the chain at speed in deep powder and can't find it, then the whole length spare will look mighty good.
 
As far as I know, nobody has broken a chain.. So why not just worry about what might break and don't ride alone. Double Riding out isn't the end of the world.

If a chain did break, it's quite likely that your engine case is going to be busted up from the chain flailing around on it's way out. I've never seen a chain break in 30+ years of riding. I've seen a master link come apart, but never a chain break. We aren't bending chain guides which is the main failure point for a master link.

Why not carry a spare piston, just incase.

I don't ride alone... that would suck. I guess the only reason I asked is because I've read on the forums about other people breaking them in the right snow conditions. I think at a minimum I'll carry a short piece plus a few masterlinks.

I agree I have never seen a 520 chain break on the snow or dirt. Seems much more likely that something else would fail. I carry a spare master link and and sheer key for the sprockets. As for riding the backcountry by yourself in the middle of winter that's a whole different discussion but is suicidal in my opinion.
