What to turbo? M8 or M1000?

My plans this fall was to pick up an '09 or '10 M8 and put a turbo on it. I currently have an '09 M1000 with 800 miles that has the SLP exhaust and other goodies on it. I have had excellent luck with this M1000 as is. I have rode with friends that have M1000 turbos and they haven't performed well. They've actually been more of a headache than a joy. I've been pretty set on leaving the M1000 the way it is and opting for the M8 turbo b/c I haven't seen an M8 turbo setup yet that didn't run excellent or have any of the problems (belt issues, fuel control issues) that the M1000 have.

For those of you with good experience with the M1000, what have you done to get decent belt life? (what is good belt life on a 1000 turbo? 500 miles, more? less?) And is the fuel control really an issue? The M1000's turbo's I've rode with didn't run smooth at all and were terrible boondocking.

I've been on Twisted M1000s, 2 OVS and a Cutler. All 3 had similar issues. I've also been on all 3 of the same turbo's on the M8's (and boondocker) and they all rocked. I think all the turbo's are pretty good as long as they are set up correctly.

I'd appreciate any thoughts here. Wait for the $$ and do the M8 or quit being a wuss and turbo the M1000?

Thanks guys!

where the others pg or rg kits, I would boost the m1000 personally but I also know enough to figure out any small problems. My friend has pg m1000 that works well through all ranges. I think either way if your not a good tuner you want to go with what ever your dealer or the closest supplier uses. If I had the money I would already have mine twisted. I havent been around a lot of turbo's but seen just as many problems with the m8, until someone that knows what they are doing gets on it and tunes it right. If any of these kits where early kits there has been some progress in setup, and also some pretty sweet air to water intercoolers that turn the sleds into a way better machine.

Favorite sled to ride last year was the m1000 boosted, it does feel heavy in the front end because of the fat rotating assembly in the engine but the power makes up for it. It had issues when I fist stuffed the kit into it, mostly due to the weak stock motor mounting and electrical system. If you get that sorted out the thing turns into a wack of fun. I have seen no other motor respond to moderate boost the way this contraption does (built a few kits on a few different things) A m8 should have the same issues with the power on par to a 1000.

I know guys that have had grief turboing stuff and seen some guys go through a load of motors just because of a set of pipes. You have to have a understanding of how thing work and what can go wrong, once you are there you will be hooked on boost and no going back.

You do not want to soak coin into something and not have it running right, it will just want more coin, study up on it, lots of info on the forum

My M1000 Is Happy Running Av fuel @ 2400 feet (with a head mod), 10psi on the gauge and tossing some heavy clutch weights, snows on the way. :face-icon-small-hap

1 sled was a pg, the others were rg. All 4 were installed by the owners, not a dealer install. I'm not well versed in turbo's, but I'm savvy enough to put one on. But after it was on there I would need some help to dial it in.

So you would go with the Twisted kit? I have read good things about them. Do all their kits require premix? I kinda like the idea of keeping oil tank as is. I was reading up on the OVS Tial setup and that looked good (they all look/sound good) but I see a lot of guys posting good reviews on the Twisted Turbos. I'm open to all of them, no favorites here. I did read that Twisted also supplies a motor mount with their kit. I didn't see where any of the other manufactors did. Do you have any feedback on belt issues with the twisted kit?

thanks!

One of the only true differences between boosting a M8 over a M1000 is the M8 has a det. sensor. Sensor is suppose to put you into a limp mode before you go boom. Like mentioned above all boost kits are good it is really going to come down to who can service you the best.

Thats the problem, my dealer even had problems with his first m1000 setup then he took it and rode with the turbo builder, they dialed it in and it rips.

You can always put the kit on then drive to someone that know how to tweak it and pay them what ever they want to make it right, or just have them do it. I have seen people adjust one thing on bd kits (thought they knew) and burned them down immediately.

I would go twisted because he had the first m1000's on boost his kits are simple and clean, I would also have them port it. I like the premix because when you add more fuel under boost you know your getting enough oil. kind of a pain but worth it to me, you just have to make sure the case is drilled. I'm not sure about the bd kits yet, havent seen or heard enough good things yet. All in all I think the twisted kit are the best setup for what I want.

Boost to boost the m1000 will kick a!! on a m8 any day!!! Face it we turbo them to go up hill fast

I rode with sleds set up by Shain before he set up my 8 , and those sleds ripped all day every day. I have a few thousand miles on my 8 now and it has been alot of fun .

An 8 is alot of fun at 12 lbs , but it would be a lie if i told you there is not an M1000 in my garage right now. I would turbo your fat cat and leave the 8's for the ladies.:face-icon-small-hap

Thanks for all the posts and PM's I received. A lot of great info and tips. Things may look better for me afterall work wise. Based on so many great responses PM'ed to me, I'm going to get an M8 ('09 or '10). Reliability, a lot more of them out there and proven setup's have me sold. I'm going to keep the 1000 around. I'm not against putting a turbo on it in the future. Hopefully the M8 will give me some good experience and comfort with the turbo's so I'll feel better about playing with a turbo on the 1000 later on.

One word of advise to those who currently don't have a turbo. Don't ride with guys that do. This is going to get expensive!

If your keeping the m1000 I would get a 09 m8 they seem to be a little more user friendly, more pull and go so you can learn without problems. Then again if I had the money I would still want the 2010 just because its a 2010.

Purchased a 2010 M8 from Mountain Magic. Just sent of the check yesterday. Thanks Kevin! Sled will have an OVS Tial kit on it. I came really close to putting a twisted RG turbo on the M1000 but I decided to get the M8 first and get a year of turbo experience.

I received a lot of great responses on PM and thanks to all!! It's going to be a good winter! Let it snow!

I've received a lot of the same response from many here on the forum. I did go down and talk to Kevin, but is has been the testimonials from many here on the forum that gave me the peace of mind to buy from Mountain Magic.

Now if he threw in a barrel of race gas as well that would be even better!! :)
