So my recoil busted so I bought a new SPI recoil and now the brand new part barely works. I can pull it once then it pulls and pulls but wont catch. what the he!! im pissed. I've tried everything.

The zx recoils fail often. I had one let go on me upon arrival at Lincoln upon arrival and just packed it in and went home.

I never tried the SPI. I went with a new one from the Skidoo dealer which I like to do so if there is a problem I can just bring it back to them....piece of cake. So far so good on the new one.

With the zx you should always ride with a pull strap just in case the recoil goes caput way back in the woods.

Get a hold of "Ox" on here, as he sells a billet housing with a improved engagement pawl. I think he was getting $200 for them...

SPI has some kit for these too now?

I held off of making these for years in assumption that someone else would be jumping on this, and no-one ever did. I had built a few units many yrs ago for myself and a cpl others, but never tried to make and sell them.

Finally I decide that no-one else is gunna, and I was git'n tired of hearing folks fuss about it - so I started to market them. Next thing I know - some feller in Ontario has some fancy thing with flames and all on it (:face-icon-small-con) and now SPI has something? Good grief!

Yes - I have alum housings as well as a much improved pawl. I have had one on my sled for many yrs, with no failures yet.

A link to the website is in my sig line I think? Or also by clicking my name above as well I think.

Pic shows the original 4 bolt pattern, but that has recently been updated to a 16 bolt hole version. I will update the pic soon. More on this in another thread.

Many yrs ago me and a chumm found a group of guys at the Snowies one day that had left at least one sled idling at the top of the hill. There were 2 sleds parked there, and at least one was running. No-one around. I have melted a piston from letting a sled sit and idle too long once when I forgot one outside after getting distracted from a phone call or something. So I was SO tempted to shut it off for him, but it finally dawned on me why he left it run. Yep - when we found them - he left it run b/c of the recoil. (We ended up helping them git a sled down the hill safely that was in the trees)

I don't know how the motor survived the day. I bet it idled for 1-1/2 hrs?
Not 100% sure that it wasn't a rental. ???

Yes - there is a cord in the tool kit to pull over the motor via the clutch in the event that your recoil dies. And if you don't have your kit - you could cut the rope off of your recoil and use that. A warm motor starts easilly. Just remember to pull ALL THE WAY clear of the clutch. No short blips here!

The stock Doocoil sucks. Plastic hub with plastic rotating on it, they get gummed up and seize. The key to keeping the stocker alive is to keep it lubed and clean. I fixed many of them when I worked at a Doolership in 01. The keeper washer deally usually breaks when getting it apart, but they are a common part. Some came screwed up new out of the crate, the keeper was pushed on too tight if I remember right. Also, when they get warm they gall and seize, if you have a non-starting sled and go pull-crazy on it. Once the plastic gets hot and galled, they are pretty hard to fix.
