What should you have in your survival kit?

You get stuck, stranded, broke down on your way back to town. The sun is coming down and there you are out in the bush. What do you do? What should you have with you? I know everyone's pack is a little different, but what are the 5 or maybe 10 essential things you must have?

Duct tape?
Matches?
Mylar blanket?
Granola bar?
knife?
Pliers?
string?
Candle?

Lets hear it!

I agree...We carry all of the above and what I will add. When do you make the decision to spend the night?

1..Tampons..to soak up some gas from your tank to start a fire :D
2..A crescent wrench
3..Caribeaners(sp)..good strong ones made for climbing 2 or 4..they don't weigh that much and don't take a lot of space..great for lots of things.
4..Folding saw
5..mirror..for signaling and also starting fires...and to keep up on your good looks;)
6..Bandanna..will double for a sling or a tourniquet.
7..Climbing rope...length is up to you..can never have enough;)

Lights Out

I carry a head lamp, because it will get dark in the woods. Some of the guys I ride with are scary looking in the dark. :moon:

SPOT Messenger, Flare for fire starter, multiple survial blankets (not the cheap tin foil ones as they suck, food, water, shovel, saw, headlamp, wind up flashlight, GPS.

There are some great threads on here if you search for "survival".

I've spent the night in a snow cave with you and you had none of this chit, now you decide to carry it :D

what to have with you

well my pack is way to heavy so let me tell you what has com in handy so far this year.

pack

must have pushed the eject button to soon. So here is what has been nice to have along. My buds give me a lot of ch!T for my pack but I am gonna keep on packin .I have used my tow rope to pull a guy out of a deep cut bank that he drifted into and to tow my dead dragon out.I have 100 feet of 2500lb electrical pull rope.real thin compact and strong. aa batteries are real nice for flashllights and reloading a gps to find your way home. I have a aa powered set of speakers which I use to share the I-pod music with everybody when we stop for a break.Extra set of goggles has been nice to have.A redbull to energize so I can keep up with the younger riders.Ibuprofin and tums I have shared numerous times. An extra pair of gloves has been greatly appreciated. But seriousll if I can can share anything KEEP YOUR AV GEAR ON YOUR BACK AND DONT TAKE IT OFF. Recently had one of our riders set off an av and get caught in it,I lost valuable time because I had let my guard down and taken my pack off. Keep your shovel and probe in your pack and keep it ready.I had started my machine and headed up to help when I remembered I had taken my pack off and had to stop and get it before I could help. I have a lot of stuff I hope I never need but I tell all of my family and friends dont worry if I have to spend a night out there because I am ready. I have food ,jerky, powerbars, boulion cubes, tea and coffeebags, fire starting stuff, tampons, magnesium, waterproof matches, extra gloves and head gear, mylar blankets, first aid kit, a few extra nuts that fit my sled, wire, tape, water which I find is usually frozen and useless, siphon hose, tools, leatherman, saw, cotton balls soaked in vaseline which work well to start a fire. There are some good lists on this site.Put some stuff in your pack or on your sled and see if you are ready when your group has their next outing. I used to catch a lot or crap and now I see others in my gruop thinking and more prepaired which is really great . It is satisfying to see your group become more prepared and able to handle the unforseen predicaments we will all experiance out there. I hate wearing that pack until I need something that I put in it.It is sure nice to be able to take it off and offer something out of it when it is needed.

Heres what I bring.

Shovel, probe
2 spare goggles
bunjie cords
zip ties
toilet paper
water
wiping cloth (for goggles)
extra food granola bars, penuts, fruit snacks
whistle
small flash light, head lamp
bandages, antiseptic, pain killers, tums, ace bandage, elbow brace, etc
Extra batteries
waterproof matches, 2 bic lighters
space blanket
swiss army knife, buck knife, leatherman
folding saw, fixed saw
hand warmers
extra gloves
BLAZE ORANGE HAT
GPS
extra quick strap comector (I will be putting regular goggle strap in too)

All this goes in my pack with my lunch for the day. (I usually pack more than I eat so I will have extra incase I need it.)

I should get some of the electrical pull cord. That stuff is super strong and light a lot of lenght wouldnt take up much space. It could come in super handy.

What you need most is friends, I have seen so many riders stop and ask you seen my buddy ?? then 10 min. later another from same group ask you seen my buddy ?? they ride around alone and lost. Our group has been togather for 15 years & if someone is missing we all stop & 2 go back to find them. We tow sleds, leave them & ride double, drop into steep nasty holes (while some stay on top) I have rode 2 avys, gone out all night ridding for lost riders, seen & done it all, the key is sticking togather & using your head

X2 always keep track of your #'s in the group!!! When people get lost in our area the S and S call upon our group alot to help because we know the area and stick to gether, so they don't need to worrie about some one else getting lost while searching.

But I always carrie the must haves, I put them in a vacum bag and seal it Dry Dry !!
